If you look at the original Japanese version, all the tools are there to figure out the puzzles, even with the liars involved. There were a few spots where the clues were just "off" in the US release that make it more obtuse than necessary. That retranslation really fixed all those issues, leaving only a few gripes about the game proper (less interesting mansion design and not enough bosses). Still, I'd wager a lot more people beat this than beat either Castlevania or Castlevania III. For those of you that don't care for Castlevania III, I would recommend looking at the Japanese version. It's balanced a bit differently, and you may find it more palatable from a difficulty/checkpointing standpoint. Also, that VRC6-infused soundtrack really amps up what was already an amazing soundtrack.

I think people were dissuaded because of the numerous false walls/holes you have to find. People were dissuaded due to its non-linearity and RPG-aspects, coming off the strictly linear and arcade-oriented original Castlevania. Additionally, C2's obtuseness was compounded by a malevolent localization, which was no fault of the original design. The best fan translation more accurately translates the script, as well as adds an in-game world map to help navigation.

Huh, I don't remember the text being that bad, but that site makes it obvious.

Well, I think I had a lot of the solutions spoiled for me by Nintendo Power back in the day, anyway.

Wow, you really do like Jackal!
I've been thinking of hitting up TMNT again sometime soon. I don't think I ever really hated it myself.

Yes, I absolutely do. It's taken me a while to get there, though, just as it did with Contra. But it just clicks with me now, and it's easily one of my favorite run-and-guns.

Using a slightly different metric that includes the ports, because I actually have differing opinions on them depending on what system they reside on. Also, I modified the categories a bit. Puzzling that they'd include Wand of Gamelon and Faces of Evil, but not Zelda's Adventure, but oh well. Notably, my real changes are with the 3DS port of Ocarina, which is better by a tier, and Link's Awakening, which sees the modern version drop a tier. Neither of which are technically retro titles yet, but I feel it's worth pointing out regardless. tiermaker.com/create/the-legend-of-zelda-saga-originalsremakesspinoff-390053
