Didn't Kawazu basically come up with FF's ATB system? I keep wondering if that's why Square keeps him around at what looks like rather high positions in the company now, despite none of his games sounding like blockbuster hits.
I have a lot of respect for him but his stuff seems too crazy for me haha. I couldn't get into SaGa Frontier 1. Frontier 2 seemed cooler but the back and forth pacing of the two stories killed my interest pretty fast. FF2 is just okay, but I could only stomach the more balanced PSP version through to the end.
I love The Last Remnant, but I'm not sure just exactly how much he was involved with that one or not. He's always listed as the executive producer and scenario writer on it. It's got an extremely unique and awesome battle system, that's for sure. But the rest of it was good traditional JRPG formula, thankfully for my tastes. I don't think it really counts but wanted to mention it haha.

Hiroyuki Ito designed the ATB guage.

Hiroyuki Ito designed the ATB guage. Hmm, I guess Ito designed that on FF4, while Kawazu was a "battle designer" on FF1-2. Guess they're both largely responsible for its style heh.

Kawazu was responsible for the original Final Fantasy battle system, though.
EDIT: Ninja'd!

I always thought Nasir Gebelli was responsible for the original battle system. He did create the ship puzzle in Final Fantasy, though. >.<

I think he was responsible for the programming on it, but the design of the battle system itself was Kawazu. Despite the bugginess, Gebelli was quite the coder.

despite none of his games sounding like blockbuster hits The initial SaGa on GB was Square's first million+ seller, it was their biggest hit at the time. The second GB SaGa sold very well also, so much so that Nintendo requested Square develop a SaGa game for SFC. That's why Romancing SaGa came to exist, and because Kawazu was so busy with it, he didn't helm the third GB SaGa. I've got that one on 360. Do you think the PS4 remaster is a big enough deal to upgrade?

I've only played through the 360 version myself, but the PC/PS4 version is much better from all I read, both from a gameplay standpoint (you aren't limited on your leader units in Unions) and from a technical standpoint (360 version is nigh unplayable from disc, and still bad installed).

I can't find the source right now, but I read The Final Fantasy Legend convinced Satoshi Tajiri (President of Game Freak) that the Game Boy could handle more than just action games, and was a big influence on other titles on the handheld (like Pokémon).

PS4 version is English audio I believe. But the dub was pretty good. The Steam version is no longer available but was dual audio. Square gonna Square and mess something up with a new port...
I know you upgraded Dark Souls... careful Ex , you'll start seeing why I champion PC/newer ports for that performance bump across the last gen or two.
And like Sarge said, there's interesting gameplay tweaks that sound like they're for the better. I did put a few hours into the Steam version awhile back but I don't think I got far enough for it to get more advanced battle wise and really notice the differences.
It's interesting that they upgraded the version of Unreal Engine used for the PS4/Switch remaster, not the old Steam version though. I think it was a smooth transition though and the lighting just might be handled a bit differently, or all the differences are just under the hood.
EDIT: So this trailer makes the PS4 versions framerate look terrible! haha, so I did some research and can confirm that it caps out at 60FPS. For a better idea of the performance, here's 2 hours of pure no-commentary gameplay:
Also worth noting for your tastes Ex , The Last Remnant world/story/etc reminds me a lot of FF12.
I can't stress enough, this is one of the coolest post-16/32bit JRPG battle systems in my book!
