Are the Growlanser games all self contained? Since IV sounds like the winning one here, but I typically prefer to play what I own first usually. Maybe I'll jump to III. II is actually a direct sequel to I, which wasn't translated. It still makes sense on its own, but there are lots of references to "the conflict 20 years ago" or whatever. III and IV are self-contained. Don't know about V and VI.

PSX wise, I still kind of think about those Vandal Hearts games. They always look pretty cool from a glance. I think the retired Tsumuri here was a fan. Has anyone else played them?
Giving Arc the Lad 3 another chance, or hitting up Twilight of the Spirits might be a good idea too.
All that said, I'm loading up SMT3 now for more... with my unusually slow and casual pace with this one for once, I'm not sure how much longer this'll take hehe. Still seems like I have a lot to do.

TotS is good stuff. Definitely another excellent option. I enjoyed AtL3, but there's no question it's a big step down from AtL2.

I'm one of the rare people who prefers Arc the Lad 3 over 2. Yes, it's a bunch of Hunter's Guild missions, but the main ones actually come together to form the core plot. Besides, it's faster-moving, with smaller-scale battles. Twilight of the Spirits is the best, but it's sort-of a strategy RPG. Really, it's a traditional RPG with a SRPG-ish battle system, like LiveALive and others.
I played through both Vandal Hearts games. They're just ok. There's nothing special about the first, and the second has that thing where the enemy moves when you do, so you have to anticipate their moves, but in the end it's also nothing special.
Saiyuki: The Journey West is a pretty cool game on the PSX, in the isometric tactical-RPG mold. It's pretty standard (the main gimmick is that you can transform), but it's just well made in every area.

Good reminder on Saiyuki, that one looks very cool.

One I've heard that's not cool, but looks it, is Hoshigami. Of course I own it, though, because that was when I bought almost any RPG...

One I've heard that's not cool, but looks it, is Hoshigami. I remember when my roommate bought it back in 2001. He paid full price and was so pissed when he realized he hated the game. His sole and strong complaint was that it was way too hard. I don't know about that, I've never played the original PS1 release. The DS port is supposed to be rebalanced to improve the gameplay experience. It may be worth giving a chance via that version.

I've heard it's not great in that form, either. I mean, maybe it's a'ight, but I think the primary complaint I hear about it is that it's an absolute slog. But perhaps it means people aren't engaging with its systems properly. I mean, I think Xenosaga 2 is a slog, too, but it's especially so if you don't engage with the battle system exactly how the game wants you to.

At any rate, there are plenty other strategy games worth playing before the questionable ones. On that note, my top 10 rec's (in no particular order):

I have at least played most of those, although I've only beaten one - Faselei! Very fun game, that.
I watched the bro play most of Battlezone. My word, that is an outstanding game. Truly a one-of-a-kind work.
