Doesn't it have a direct sequel on the Wii? Yes, the Wii sequel is Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, but I've not yet played it.

It's also quite expensive right now. Emulate or run on a hacked Wii if you must play it. (I wish I'd bought all those $5 copies years ago when I got mine.) I like the Fire Emblem games to a point starting from the GBA entry, but I completely agree with toei on the annoyances of permadeath and reinforcements. I think I'd dig them a lot more if it didn't feel like my fragile characters were at the mercy of the RNG gods.

I own a legit copy of Radiant Dawn, bought it years ago for nothing. Sometimes the preemptive hoarding pays off.

I beat Final Fantasy Tactics on the second to last day of the month! I'll write my thoughts after I finish work.

Final Fantasy Tactics
This is one of the most acclaimed games of the PS1 era, and rightly so. It's one of the best SRPGs I've ever played.
For starters, the story. It's a mature story, with memorable characters and thrilling plot twists. I loved the focus on religious conspiracies and social upheaval. It tells a lot with fewer words and cutscenes than most modern JRPGs or AAA games.
The graphics are beautiful. I'm a sucker for 2D sprites on 3D environments and fell instantly in love with the game's presentation. The OST is equally beautiful, making every battle more epic.
And the gameplay is so addictive. The game is very challenging in the first hours; the AI has no mercy and can see through a lot of my unit's stats and skill ranges. Moreover, there's a lot of freedom to experiment with classes and skills. Maybe too much. It can be frustrating to spend hard-earned skill points on useless or broken skills. However, the more I played, the more I understood the game's basic systems and was able to figure out strategies. It's a wonderful feeling to find a good party setup and obliterate my enemies! The game let me enjoy this superiority long enough before upsetting me with a new difficult challenge.
Speaking about difficulty, Wiegraf, one of the game's bosses is infamous for softlocking the game if you're unprepared and didn't use two or more save files. There are unfair difficulty spikes and it gets easier to break the game as it goes on, though I guess that is also fun.
While I agree with the criticism that the story's last chapter was rushed and the last bosses are not as interesting as Wiegraf, I think the journey and ending are nevertheless satisfying. The game felt like a big, epic odyssey even though it's shorter than most JRPGs nowadays.
In my playthrough, I made Ramza a Monk with a Ninja's Dual Wield ability and a Strength-raising accessory. He was able to kill Wiegraf almost effortlessly. The Monk's healing and reviving abilities were useful too. Naturally, I repeated the same build with another unit. I also had a ninja who could reach anybody quickly and heal them, as well as killing enemies with low HP who could still be a threat to my party. The three Divine Knights of the game made the rest of my main party. I tried to use magic users, but didn't find them useful or to my liking. I prefer strong and quick blows to the enemy.
I was tempted to do the sidequests and recruit the hidden characters, but I played so much I got burnt out. I was ready to finish Ramza's story and that's what I did. However, I think it's great the game has so much content for those who can't get enough.
I played the PSP port of Final Fantasy Tactics, which is known for two things: its superior translation and annoying slowdowns. Thankfully, the slowdowns were an intentional feature to compensate the slow loading times of early PSP systems and therefore, they can be removed with a fan patch. Without the slowdowns, the port is a treat and the most convenient and comfortable way to play this amazing game.
Final rating: 9/10.

ChemaHappy to see that you enjoyed Final Fantasy Tactics as much as you did. 9/10 is the same score I gave the game. However, I thought the final boss was cool and quite enjoyed it. The PSP version's translation is excellent agreed, superior to the original PS1's. In the world of Japanese SRPGs, I would put FFT in the top 3 I've ever played. Mandatory gaming.

paulofthewest Do you remember your clear time? I'd be interested in knowing how playing the game in RTS mode sped up the completion rate. Just FYI, I did try to find the time, but no luck. It was definitely over 20 hrs. I'd guess in the 30-40 range. Definitely not 60.
While the RTS sped up most things. There was a lot of battle restarts because I'd get half-way through and then mess up...
