Wow, that sounds pretty neat. Agreed about the graphics, they look awesome to me. Not sure I've played anything with a movement scheme like that. It's always interesting how in some normal SRPG's though, if turtling is a good idea or not. It never is in the Front Mission series with all the ranged weaponary, haha. I think I used to play SRPG's a bit too defensively, but Front Mission made me get a lot riskier and more aggressive.
Some of the jazziest caves I've ever heard.

feels like an early-ish SNES translation According to RHDN, the patch released May 30th, 2001. Definitely early work for AGTP. Being that good and that short, yeah I'll have to check this one out after BDP.

I was going to post some screenshots but got lazy. Yeah, I definitely recommend giving it a go just because of its brevity. Although I'd happily play something like this up until around 10 hours or so... or I think I would, anyway. I'd rather be left wanting more than have a game overstay its welcome.

I'd probably like this more today. At the time it really bothered me that it was so short.

In Blue Dragon Plus tonight, the game unlocked a subsystem where you can build your own robots. With reconfigurable circuitry and power distribution on a breadboard of sorts. (I'm playing on a real DS, so can't do a screenshot.) This game just keeps piling on layers of extra strategic game design (like side-quests unlocked recently too). There's a lot of subsystems going on at this point, but I think it's thick enough now. At this point I have four different parties exploring various parts of the "cube dungeon". It's fairly difficult to even explain how this game works without typing eight paragraphs. Let's just say it's very unique.

Wonder if it's better than the first Blue Dragon? That one just looked like it wanted to be an obvious Dragon Quest clone, not sure how much it deviates from the traditional JRPG formula.

Proud of you paulofthewest , I've recommended FT so many times over so many years, never had any takers. I hope it pulls through as win for you. I remember when the game gave me EMP shotgun shells I knew it was something special. Have NPCs started talking about the Calculator yet? This game is great, but is long which is just not good timing for me right now.
They just starting talking about calculator and I'm in Bunker Epsilon. I'm in the mission where I need to go in and destroy some power cells. I have two sets of power armor and lot of energy weapons so I'm assuming I'm in the home stretch.
I don't have an EMP shotgun, but I have the prototype pulse rifle which is ripping it up right now.
This game does a very good job of making you use different people for different situations. IE: I can't just make a band of snipers and take everyone out. An enemy team of strong throwers or melee would just wreck me (especially the robot kind.) I have to think about which strat is best (trapping, ambush, where to set my heavy weapons guy, or do I start throwing grenades.) I am playing on hard right now, I think insane would be dumb.

paulofthewest: Have you played Fallout 1-2? If so how do you think Tactics stacks up? I wasn't too big on the "combat" of 1-2, so I'm hoping I dig Tactics more in that regard. Definitely looks cooler.

Wonder if it's better than the first Blue Dragon? I believe Plus is considerably more unique than the vanilla styled original Blue Dragon. Plus is also made by Brownie Brown, not Mistwalker. But yeah it's a JRTS as opposed to a JRPG. JRTS is definitely rarer. My only issue with Blue Dragon Plus at present, is its characters are lame and its plot sucks. But mechanically it's intriguing. I wasn't too big on the "combat" of 1-2, so I'm hoping I dig Tactics more in that regard. Definitely looks cooler. Fallout Tactics has a completely different combat system than any other Fallout game. It's a lot closer to something like Jagged Alliance 2 than say the original Fallout. Although the original Fallout is a masterpiece WRPG and you bring shame upon your family for generations by dismissing it. This game is great, but is long which is just not good timing for me right now. I'm glad you find FT to be worth your time. The game is long. I remember putting somewhere between 60-65 hours into it when I beat it. I did go out of my way to look for all the hidden side-missions though. FT has a fair amount of side-missions and quite a few hidden gags as well. That works too. I remember FT has loads and loads of guns and explosives. Plenty of variety. Interesting. I probably beat the game on normal myself, but that was back in 2002 so I'm not 100% sure. I recall some of the missions being very challenging, even if it was on normal.

paulofthewest : Have you played Fallout 1-2? If so how do you think Tactics stacks up? I wasn't too big on the "combat" of 1-2, so I'm hoping I dig Tactics more in that regard. Definitely looks cooler. I've played (and enjoyed) both 1-2. I do prefer the combat in Tactics as it relies more on team synergy, has better weapon selection, more character development/diversity, and you can switch out your squad as needed. Also in FT, once you start a mission you can't just exit out, so you must come prepared. It is a huge upgrade.
Right now I'm still utilize "real-time" combat mode. I tried turn-based and it does give you significantly more control, but then the battles take significantly longer. Tactics does allow you switch between to two so a player can choose when he needs that level of control. It has been awhile since I beat 1&2 so I don't if the same applied there.
Fallout Tactics has a completely different combat system than any other Fallout game. It's a lot closer to something like Jagged Alliance 2 than say the original Fallout. Although the original Fallout is a masterpiece WRPG and you bring shame upon your family for generations by dismissing it. Now I want to play Jagged Alliance. Is it long? I probably should branch out before sticking with FT theme. Xeogred I'll try not to hold that against you ;P FT has a fair amount of side-missions and quite a few hidden gags as well. It is a never ending late 90s gag real. Canadian Invaders, Humans generating electricity...
