I am surprised you are using the real-time combat mode, I didn't like that mode at all. Turn-based was my jam, so much more control and the ability to handle emerging situations more tactically. BUT yes turn-based is a lot slower.
Also with FT, you can control shooting profile elevation. Prone, kneel, stand... it all changes ballistic accuracy and damage modeling. You can also directly target non-enemy items like explosive barrels. Couldn't do that in F1 or F2, IIRC. Then there's the aspect where you can setup sentry reaction positions too. It's a deep combat system.
As for JA, I have only played Jagged Alliance 2. I didn't play a lot of it, but it seemed decent enough. I don't think JA2 allows for real-time combat though.

paulofthewest : Have you played Fallout 1-2? If so how do you think Tactics stacks up? I wasn't too big on the "combat" of 1-2, so I'm hoping I dig Tactics more in that regard. Definitely looks cooler. I've played (and enjoyed) both 1-2. I do prefer the combat in Tactics as it relies more on team synergy, has better weapon selection, more character development/diversity, and you can switch out your squad as needed. Also in FT, once you start a mission you can't just exit out, so you must come prepared. It is a huge upgrade.
Right now I'm still utilize "real-time" combat mode. I tried turn-based and it does give you significantly more control, but then the battles take significantly longer. Tactics does allow you switch between to two so a player can choose when he needs that level of control. It has been awhile since I beat 1&2 so I don't if the same applied there. Fallout Tactics has a completely different combat system than any other Fallout game. It's a lot closer to something like Jagged Alliance 2 than say the original Fallout. Although the original Fallout is a masterpiece WRPG and you bring shame upon your family for generations by dismissing it. Now I want to play Jagged Alliance. Is it long? I probably should branch out before sticking with FT theme. Xeogred I'll try not to hold that against you ;P Well I've been through this before with others here...
I have played and beaten Fallout 1 a handful of years ago, probably alongside its GOG release. I liked everything about it, except the combat. I tried playing with companions and all they ever did was get in the way around doorways/corners and get shot up or shoot me up. That or poking radscorpions was never fun. Knowing that Fallout 2 is like twice as long, I didn't get too far in that one. In that one I didn't love how I'd sometimes be in towns for hours. To each their own... but I prefer the more immediate immersion of the newer first person Fallout's over the originals. Although 4's writing is pretty bad, but 3 was good and New Vegas is excellent.
I grew up playing a lot of Jagged Alliance 1 on some "Mega Games" compilation disc and some of 2. Never beat them, but they're awesome and far better than Fallout 1-2 when it comes to the action. So I've always suspected Fallout Tactics will be a lot more my jam.

I adore the original Fallout, but I'm not as much a fan of Fallout 2. During the development of F2, Interplay lost some of the key personnel who defined the original game. F2 also suffered a rushed and crunched development. These factors lead to the sequel not being as good as the original. Overall Fallout 2 for me always felt like a glorified expansion module, rather than a true sequel. Fallout 3 was fun and interesting, but it felt too removed from the original game in locale and spirit. For my tastes, New Vegas was the true sequel to the original Fallout. New Vegas has the same soul and vibe, but done in a modern first person format.

So, because it's the only way I've found to motivate myself to play games recently, I am going to announce the game I'd like to try for this month's theme: Majin Tensei 2, a SRPG Megami Tensei spin-off on the SNES that was translated a couple years ago. The first game received a fan-translation, too, but it has a bad reputation; after a quick search, it seems no one likes it. Back in the day, that wouldn't have deterred me. Maybe it is good, and just misunderstood, or maybe it's not good, but also not that bad. I'm not willing to bet 10 hours on in anymore, or however long it would take to be sure. The apparent consensus (and it's fragile, as it really just amounts to a handful of reviews or comments) is that Majin Tensei 2 is much improved, and the story is self-contained, so... Have you gotten around to trying this out yet?

Xeogred It's impressive how well the dances fit. The OST does sound really good. I haven't, but that's because I've been playing something else. I'm pretty deep into it by now, and I'm a one-game man. I GUESS YOU COULD SAY I'M MONO-GAME-OUS. Some of the music in that game would fit in Majin Tensei 2. I still plan to try it.

In Fallout Tactics I'm on the final level I believe. They explained the calculator was a mix of machine and brains for its neural net, but it is "hard-wired" to cleanse the earth right after the war. I'm curious if they will explain why it got hardwired. It seems like the left over humans should be able to overrule.

IIRC FT has multiple endings, I'm not sure which one I got (I beat the game in 2002). I do remember the final level though. Those walking tanks can be real bastards.

Ya, it is a bit of a slog right now. Although, they definitely give you all the energy ammo/weaponry you need.
