why do some streamers and let's players think they need to read aloud every single line of dialogue? Aggravates me too. And they always seem to have those nasally annoying voices to go with it. These days I just mute Let's Plays by default as soon as I start sampling one. I say "sample" because I only watch them when trying to determine if a game is something I'd like to play. I've never watched an entire Let's Play video before. based on a series of Belgian comics I've known about this game forever, but I had no idea it was based on a comic. In America XIII's selling point was "it's an FPS with cel shading".

I remember that it was based on comics (although I didn't know originally in the day), and I remember David Duchovny did the main character's voice acting.

It's not surprising Ubisoft's ads never mentioned the comics. I love American comics, but the comics market and average readership is very insular. Thus, European comics are at best a niche in the U.S. On top of that, the game looks fantastic, but is not really accurate to the comics' look. The comics are worth a read even if the authors eventually get tired and there's the ocasional European smugness.

European comics have certain strengths over American comics, but action isn't one. That fight makes no sense at all.

I'm dumping Jake Hunter: Memories of the Past (DS).
The final straw for me was seeing obvious yakuza localized as Italian mobsters and given names like "Guido" and "Drago". This game has to have one of the most blatantly stupid localizations I've ever seen. The original series takes place in Japan - in Tokyo's Shinjuku, specifically. This was changed to some fictional American city called "Aspicio". Not only was it not a necessary change, it just doesn't work. Most of the characters don't really look Japanese (though they are - Jake Hunter's real name is Saburou Jinguji), but some of the background images are very, very clearly depictions of Tokyo. The victim in the first case worked in a hostess' bar, ffs. Totally American, right? I knew as soon as they started talking about "the Cosa Nostra" that it'd probably be yakuza, but actually seeing the sprites was too much dissonance. Whoever made the call that the game should be Americanized is an idiot.

Well, Capcom did the same things with Phoenix Wright, so I'm not entirely surprised at the decision.

True, the Phoenix Wright game I played had a case taking place in a rural, traditional Japanese village, with people in kimonos, but we were still supposed to pretend it wasn't Japan. Overall the tone is a lot wackier and more cartoony, though, so it worked better. Jake Hunter is strongly inspired by hardboiled detective novels, but it's more down to earth.

I'm dumping Jake Hunter: Memories of the Past (DS) I kinda enjoyed that one (7/10): gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ds/960108-jake-hunter-memories-of-the-past/reviews/164668However... I agree with you entirely. As a western gamer, I would have appreciated the legitimacy and mystique of this game having kept its original locations, culture, and nationalities. Capcom did the same thing with Ace Attorney, "Americanizing" it for no good reason.
Edit: Ninja'd on the AA reference, but yeah.

I agree with both of y'all, by the way. I don't think it ruins them, but it would have been better to keep it more authentic. And yes, since the AA games are more ridiculous, I could accept more incongruency in the localization. I still ended up enjoying the Jake Hunter games I've played, and I think Ex's rating is about right. Not amazing, but if you're in the mood for a more serious Japanese-style adventure game, it will do the job.
