I played Hexen 2 back in ye day. I did not finish it though, because it was hella hard. Or at least, it was hella hard on normal difficulty back in the late '90s, when I didn't have as much FPS experience as I do now. I do recall it had strong atmosphere and being impressed with the weapon animations. There's a spell book you can get that is a weapon, it's really cool. You'd probably enjoy Hexen 2 quite a bit. (And Heretic II for that matter, though it's a third person shooter.)

Pretty weird how Heretic II is abandonware. Guess some licensing was lost along the way or something. It does look pretty cool too though. I enjoyed the original even though it's just a literal Doom reskin, but I couldn't get into the first Hexen much. Seems like it would have been pretty cool at the time though, breaking away from the "Doom clones" that were all the rave. lol

What's weird about Heretic II to me, is I've yet to meet anyone online who's even played through the game. Other than myself I mean (I beat it in 2001). Raven made it and it runs on the Quake II engine, I enjoyed Heretic II far more than the original Heretic. Definitely recommend to third person shooter fans. (Granted you are shooting magic not bullets.) There's also platforming and simple puzzle solving at times.

I think Tsumuri played Heretic II himself and recommended it to me here or in a PM... but uh yeah, RIP that user I guess (for others that don't know I guess he deleted his account for whatever reason).

I recall recommending Heretic II to Tsumuri, I'm glad he enjoyed it. I don't know why he deleted his account, but I hope he's doing well wherever he is.

My game for this month's topic is none other than DOOM 64.
I'm playing the port on Nintendo Switch and having a blast. This is everything I wanted from a Doom 3. Great art direction, fantastic visuals and soundtrack, and challenging levels. It doesn't deviate from the original formula, but the move to polygonal environments let the devs be more creative with the map design; it might sound ridiculous, but having switches change part of the scenery in real time makes scouting the maps more rewarding. The weapons are a joy to use, specially the double barrel shotgun, and the enemy count hits the right spot: not too many, not too few.
If there's any criticism I can think of, is that I wish Nightdive Studios had included a CRT filter in this port.

Doom 64 is fantastic. The new episode added into the remaster is great as well and amps up the difficulty.
If you like the darker soundtrack, the same composer scored the PSX version, which I finally played a year or two ago and had a blast with. You have to re-adjust to some older controls and chunkier graphics, but it felt like going back in time to when I first played Doom PC. The PSX version has some new lighting effects, mixes in enemies that weren't there originally (like Chaingunners in Doom 1 maps), but it is lacking the Spider Mastermind, Arch-Viles, and Revenants are broken. Freaking cool version though.

Just finished a run through The Last Blade. I know folks prefer Samurai Shodown (particularly the second game) to these generally, but I like the fluidity here better. I used Kaede to rip through the game, only really starting to get wrecked against Musashi (who I thought was the last boss) and the real last boss. Thankfully, he kinda gives you a "free" round before he goes berserk on you, so a few credits later and I managed to slip through. Boy, he will destroy you if he gets hits in, though. I'll give this an 8/10.

Were there any arcade cabinets for that one? Looks familiar... but I know I played SamSho at some arcades for sure.

Yeah, I remember seeing it in one of the Big Red Neo Geo cabs back in the day.
