Just finished a run through The Last Blade. It's a solid 2D fighter for 1997, in an age when 2D fighters were considered passé. Its sequel is super great. Yoooo, Chasm: The Rift is coming to Steam later this year??? The HRG Effect strikes again... Chasm: The Rift (1997) PC That's an FPS that deserves a second chance too, glad to see it get re-released.
- I'd like to finish two more 1997 games this month, just short stuff. My gaming time right now is being devoted to finishing Dragon Age: Origins... close to 40 hours invested in it presently. I did dabble in a 1997 release a few days ago, well it was released in 1997 in Japan anyway; Yoshi's Story on N64. I only finished the first stage so far. Definitely don't know what I think of that one yet. Seems like it's a forgotten N64 platformer I never read anyone talking about. Any fans?

Yoshi's Story is such an odd bird. I never have cottoned to it like I did Yoshi's Island, which is still an all-time great (and also still the best in the series).

It is critical, to not expect anything even half as good or similar to Yoshi's Island.
Even as a more innocent youngin at the time, I thought Yoshi's Story was horrible. Nasty graphics, headache inducing music, ugly UI, the introduction to constipated Yoshi GRUNT, and it's over in a blink (thankfully?)

None of that sounds too promising, I'll focus on other stuff for '97. There are quite a few Yoshi games these days though.

I mean, I didn't want to say much to sway you either way. It seriously is like 7 levels long, if even. There's multiple paths and I played through a few of them as a kid, since that's what you did with the few games you could get your hands on back then.
But seriously yeah, I'm still flabbergasted they went from Yoshi's Island, to that thing! Nasty... had to have been a completely different dev team.

Title: Sonic RPlatform: Saturn Region release played: USA Year of release: 1997 Developer: Traveller's Tales Publisher: SEGA Graphics: 4/5 Audio: 2/5 Challenge: 3/5 Fun factor: 1/5 Quick Thoughts: Sonic R (Sonic Racing) is a Saturn (also ported to PC) racing game starring various characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. This was at the time effectively SEGA's response to Mario Kart 64. What an awful response it was. From trash controls, to awful racing physics, a misguided OST, lackluster content... the crap list goes on. I would only recommend Sonic R to diehard Sonic fans curious to sample every last game Sonic was dragged into. +Surprisingly decent 3D Saturn graphics. +It does have Sonic in it. +It doesn't crash. +It's not very long. +There's not a Sonic R 2. -Awful controls and ridiculous physics. -Mario Kart 64 destroys this "game" up, down, left, right, and center.
-Horrible racing track design in general. -About as satisfying as up picking jello cubes with tweezers. -WTF even is this OST.
Ex's time to beat: 20 minutes (begrudgingly finished all Grand Prix courses) Ex's rating: 3/10

It's impressive from a technical standpoint, but yeah, not great.

"Sonic R might have the greatest OST in gaming" - one of my friends from last weekend.
I do think it's charming and fun, for the memes and not taken seriously, but uh yeah... that game always looked wack to me. At least Sonic is running on foot. That makes more sense than him being in vehicles like the new stuff.
