That Gex parody video was 100% spot on, very impressive lampooning all around. As far as Gex video games go, the franchise was never able to muster even an ounce of interest from me. I was probably already too old for Gex when it originally debuted. I do recall seeing video of the game once, and thinking the character animation was smooth and it was interesting how Gex could climb on walls and ceilings. Maybe that Spider-Man movement set lead to some unusual level design at least. I never saw actually saw a 3DO console as a kid. I thought 3DO were the guys who made Army Men and Battletanx on N64. But I did see Gex. There were ads for his 3D platformers in Nintendo Power. There was also a Hollywood video not far from my parents' house. They had a big cardboard cutout of Gex on the wall above their video game aisle. Although I never played any Gex games, he reminds me of the 90's now.

- Here's your WTF for today: - There's a Yuu Yuu Hakusho 2D 3DO exclusive fighter:

Yeah, I wrote about that 3DO YYH fighter when I did the Yu Yu Hakusho Franchise Overview for HG101. We also speculated about the animation technology the game used on this forum for a while. The game is not great, but it's not terrible either. There's at least... 5 better YYH fighters, off the top of my head, but it's not the worst either. There's also a 3DO-exclusive Ultraman fighter, and another for Sailor Moon. There was going to be one for DBZ, probably using that same technique (digitized anime cells, looks like), but it was cancelled. Again, part of the 3DO's Japanese push. Actually, I didn't think of this before, but even though the 3DO Company that created the console was American, the main manufacturer and distributor was Panasonic, a Japanese company. So it was kind of a Japanese console, too. That explains the relatively high number of Japanese exclusives, that Japanese 3DO magazine whose cover you posted, etc. According to the Japanese wikipedia page, it actually sold a bit better in Japan than America, with 720,000 copies to 630,000 (and Japan's population is less than half of the US'). It's worth mentioning that the 3DO was unique in that various companies could license the tech and produce their own version of it, so there are multiple models by multiple companies. It lasted a bit longer in South Korea, first under Goldstar/LG, and later Samsung, which is why there are a few SK games. I assume it was still a relatively niche product over there. All in all, it definitely has a pretty interesting history. There's also The Eye of Typhoon, a South-Korean 2D fighter by Viccom (SNK's SK distributor), which was planned as a NEO GEO arcade release, but only came out for the 3DO and MS-DOS. It's not really as good as basically any Neo Geo fighter, but some people like it.

Also, just for fun, here are the sales figures I could find for the failed 32-bit consoles of the '90s (all from wikipedia):
3DO: Over 2 million worldwide Phillips CD-i: Supposedly, 1 million users worldwide by 1994... kind of hard to believe, but then it was marketed more as a multimedia unit than a straight console, I guess? 32X: 600,000 NEC PC-FX: 400,000 Atari Jaguar: 150,000
So there you have it, the 3DO was king of the marginal also-ran consoles.

I loved the 3D Gex games on PSX/N64. Parody was all the rave around then for me and comedy movies, so the gags and references hit a nice spot. Seemed a little rare then too?
But yeah I just look at videos now and know those games are best left in the past.

I've got a 3DO, 32X, PC-FX, and Jaguar....... but I don't think I've ever seen anything related to the CD-i in real life.
I have Gex -- not on the 3DO but via GOG.com, it's okay for what it is. (The description literally says "a wisecracking gecko with a major attitude" -- glad this sort of mascot was abandoned after the 90s, oof).

My biggest "I wish this actually came out back in the day" 3DO game is Tomb Raider.
I would expect graphics like this on the Sega Saturn, not the 3DO.

Ex You're at over 1.3 with just the Japan and US numbers, throw in South Korea... The November 1995 issue of Next Generation had the system selling 750,000 by then. On the other hand, there were claims of Gex selling a million copy around the same time, when it was still a 3DO exclusive. So 1-2 million systems sold is probably a safe estimate. IT DEFINITELY SOLD MORE CONSOLES THAN YOU DID Also, I'm 99% sure this was the off-road game I remember trying in that store as a kid.

IT DEFINITELY SOLD MORE CONSOLES THAN YOU DID That's true, my SMELLI (Simple Man™ Entertainment Lady Lover Interactive) console only sold 100,000 copies. And all were in Japan.
