anayo Yeah, Classicvania kind of sucks honestly. Slow, boring, unfair. You spend more time whipping candles than enemies, movement is unpleasantly stiff on purpose, the protagonists literally jump backwards into pits when bats brush their face. Out of the games I listed, they're the only ones I flat-out dislike. I can see why all those qualities of old school Castlevania isn't for you. It actually took me a while to get into the series because my first one was Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP. It had the same stiff movement, but with 3D polygon graphics. It didn't make sense to me at all and I was baffled that people praised it so much. I especially hated how crows could damage me. I thought, "That's stupid, in real life I would just punch the crow and break its ribcage." Then I stopped and thought about how getting damaged by crows made sense in an NES game with 2D sprite graphics but not a 3D polygonal PSP game. So I tried the NES Castlevania instead and then it clicked for me. However, there are other games that are praised to high heaven which I have honestly tried and failed to enjoy, like Final Fantasy VII. So, I guess we're even. XD |

Some sacred cows getting slain in here lol. I love Classicvania. Rondo of Blood is a masterpiece, as is Super Castlevania IV imo. I even like the Gameboy ones (though I don't love them lol)!
I've never played a Toshinden, somehow. But then I don't play many fighting games anyway, 2D or 3D. You know what I think always sucked? Crash Bandicoot.

8-bit Castlevanias were great if you grew up with them. For some of you younger guys where 32-bit was your 8-bit, I can see how you might not be so enthused. So fair enough if toei dislikes Castlevania platformers; he enjoys shōnen DBZ JRPGs and I couldn't care less about those. We all like what we like. Well toei at least we both agree Taz-Mania on Genesis is KUSOGE.  Kusoge thread with a small stipulation. No licensed cartoon/comic/whatever crap, no obvious shovelwareKusoge loosely translates to “shitty game” in Japanese. It was originally used colloquially to refer to broken fighting games that were still fun to play despite bad design. Over time this designation morphed to mean pure shit games of any genre. Yeah... I've surely played mass quantities of fitting titles in my past forty years of gaming. But I'll just start with a few NES games I suffered as rentals as a kid:  Dash Galaxy in the Alien Asylum
Mystery Quest
Amagon
All three of these were disappointing crappy platformers. Bad in just about every way. Dash has abysmal level design and asinine enemy placement, Mystery Quest has god awful controls/physics with ultra generic graphics, and Amagon also has bad controls and with completely unbalanced difficulty. That's just barely touching on why those three games were some of the worst rentals I endured as a kid. Really sucked back then to pick a turd out like one of these on a Friday night, only to be saddled with it all weekend trying eke out some measure of fun from a concentrated black hole of misery.

You know, I don't hate Crash, but I also definitely don't love them.
Anyone play Metal Mech on NES? I think I convinced myself it was great (thanks, GamePro!), but it's honestly pretty iffy.

Well I guess my take is unique because I grew up on the NES. I missed out on the CV's (somehow) so I didn't have any nostalgia, but yeah I wouldn't say I was blown away going through CV1 and then especially CV3, what a slog. I still need to beat CV2, seems okay. On the other hand I also played the classic Contra's as a young adult and could go either way, maybe one day I'd rather play Contra and Super C over Contra 3 and Hard Corps. Both gens killed it. And then there's cases where I'd probably ultimately take NES Mega Man over Mega Man X. NES CV just didn't do much for me but I absolutely loved Super CV4, Bloodlines, and Rondo. Crash Bandicoot. Killing me Kazin.  I went through the Crash remaster trilogy a few years back and loved them. Only had some nostalgia for the first one. The first two games are hilariously evil and made most of my beloved Dark Souls look like a walk in the park. It was kind of awesome how balls to the wall Crash 4 was too. They were catering to the old fans for sure... I love that style with static camera's and bite sized levels, kind of in the vein of 3D World. I still have the Spyro remasters to hit up. Not sure what I'll make of those. I kind of like platformers that just get straight to the point thesedays... like most 8/16bit ones and then Crash/3D World. Spyro looks more "adventure" which is more of a mood thing. That said I'm a big fan of Ratchet & Clank, so it'll be cool to see Insomniac's platformer origins with Spyro.

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES) *Many series fans haven't even played this one, because they think it's a GB port of CV2. No, Belmont's Revenge is a unique entry.
These 8-bit ones are decent:Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun (FC) Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES) Kid Dracula (GB) Vampire Killer (MSX2) There 8-bit ones are crappy:Castlevania Legends (GB) Castlevania: The Adventure (GB)
Haunted Castle (Arcade) I played the original Crash Bandicoot and Spyro both on PS1 when they first released. I didn't enjoy them at all, and had no further interest in their sequels. For me they were too childish in non-charming ways. My brother (who is 8.5 years younger than me) enjoyed Crash when he was eleven, and my daughter enjoyed Spyro when she was five. They were the right ages for those games. |

Ex 16-bit was my 8-bit. I grew up on the Genesis. I've also never played a DBZ RPG, so I'm not sure where that came from, lol. I was thinking of trying the DS RPG, though. I actually don't hate Amagon, but it is absurdly hard and I never made it very far. You know a game has no love to give when it's hard to beat the very first level. The controls are fine, though. Maybe the jump is a little crazy, I can't remember. I've never heard of Dash Galaxy, and I don't know if I've heard of Mystery Quest since the title is so generic, but I don't think so. Looking at footage of the first, it does look horrible. I hate slow movement in action games, and this game moves like it's underwater. Those are three awful covers, too.

The original Mystery Quest (Hao Kun no Fushigina Tabi for the FDS) apparently has a bunch of content that was cut when the game was localized for the NES. I dunno if this simply means more shittiness, but I'm interested in trying it out.
On the topic of Crash Bandicoot, my brother (the PSX owner of the house, in the 90s) had the game and I never got into it. Like a lot of early 3D stuff it came across as a slow, clunky tech demo type of experience.

I've also never played a DBZ RPG, so I'm not sure where that came from, lol. You said you played Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku, which is a DBZ RPG, ergo that showed your interest. And you recently beat and enjoyed Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure, which due to the "adventure" name I wrongfully assumed was an RPG, but is apparently a DBZ beat 'em up actually. Personally, I've never been able to get into DBZ at all. 🤷♂️ I was too old for it when it became popular in the west. That said, I'll admit if any DBZ RPG would be legitimately good, it'd have to be Monolith Soft's Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans on DS. That would be due to the over 9000 quality of the developer, rather than the source material. Anyone play Metal Mech on NES? Yep. That was another I rented as a kid due to its cover and me always having been a fan of mechs. Unfortunately, the actual gameplay is horrid, agreed. As a kid in elementary and middle school I rented hundreds of games. The reason being, for years my mother worked at a large VHS rental store (as a result I rented hundreds of movies as well). The VHS store had a huge video game section in the back. Pretty much every Friday I'd ride my bike to where she worked, and pick out a game or two for the weekend. As a result I played plenty of truly awful stuff. I'm sure if I were to pick my brains on the subject, I could come up with dozens more. That said, unlike renting I never bought games without researching them first (reading magazines, talking to friends). With the sole exception of Sword of Sodan on Genesis, which turned out to be a game truly worthy of this thread. Crash Bandicoot / tech demo type of experience I'll concede the one positive I'd give Crash on PS1, is that it was technically impressive. Naughty Dog's programmer did some really clever tricks to get the graphics. But good tech design doesn't always equate to good game design. The first Crash was so awfully unfun I've never had any desire to play its sequels. |
