Huh, so Mode 7 is kind of just a switch to make those effects function better? The SNES PPU has two different graphic processing chips in it. You could say the SNES has two PPUs, but they work in tandem and from a programmatic standpoint are treated as one processor. The cooperative functionality of those two chips changes based on the video mode the PPU scheme is presently in. When Mode 7 is enabled one PPU processes the tilemap while the other fetches the tileset. So basically one PPU is constantly rearranging where ever pixel appears on screen, while the other is simultaneously feeding it the available pixels to display. The limitation of this visual representation being a unified image means, as Sarge previously said, Mode 7 cannot perform separate matrix transformations on sprites. The PPU can't separate the sprites from the background to transform them independently, because in Mode 7 the sprites and background are flattened together into a single matrix. Regardless there isn't a SNES PPU mode that supports transforming sprites natively anyway. However, there is a dedicated SNES cartridge chip that will do sprite stretching and scaling exclusive of the SNES PPU: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_FXThat is how Yoshi's Island accomplishes its sprite manipulation effects.

I kept playing Musashi no Bouken every once in a while, and I have reached a point where I somehow can't trigger the next event. I am supposed to go to a location to ask for a progress item, but there are no NPCs there. I wonder if it is a bug. Which fan translation patch are you using? The one by Gaijin Productions, or the one by Stardust Crusaders? Stardust Crusaders. Also, where are you playing it? Depending on the emulator (or on actual hardware), a few games haven't been tested very well to ensure they work as they should. I'm playing it on the emulator Mesen. Maybe it's glitch? It's just as likely that it's not triggering because you didn't speak to some earlier NPC. That's usually how triggers work in old RPGs. But I think it's more likely this. However, I think I have spoken with every NPC at this point. Guess I'll have to go for a third round of speaking with NPCs.

Wonder if you could try in a less accurate emulator like FCE Ultra. Some of these hacks haven't been tested very well in real hardware, and Mesen's accuracy is quite high. But yeah, it probably is more likely a missed plot trigger.

Stardust Crusaders / Mesen That's exactly the combo I'd use too. At this point, I'd watch a Youtube longplay within 15-30 minutes of where you are now, just to see if there are any NPCs you missed talking to, an item you missed picking up, or any other kind of possible plot trigger you didn't hit.

If you have the save file, maybe you could upload it somewhere? I wouldn't mind giving it a test, see if I can figure it out.

Thanks, but I don't want you to waste your time. I'll figure it out myself one way or another.

Messed with three games today.
Mega Turrican, the Genesis-exclusive entry. Seems nice at first glance. Will give it more time. I've also got the two SNES Super Turrican and the NES Super Turrican lined up.
Armored Police Metal Jack, SNES. I don't even have to check to know that this must be based on an anime license, just based on the general feel and aesthetics. It's a terrible side-scroller. What makes it nearly unplayable is the way the controls were programmed. You can't walk and punch at the same time, and in fact, once you throw a punch, you have to wait until the animation is finished before your controls will respond again. If that weren't bad enough, attacks are very slow to come out - there's a natural input lag far beyond anything emulation and modern TVs can produce - and hitboxes extend well past sprites, so it's very hard to hit enemies and not get hit.
Ashita no Joe, SNES. All 3 early '90s AnJ games - 2 in the arcades, 1 on the SNES - were developed by an obscure company called Wave. I've really never played any boxing games outside of the Punch-Out series for more than a few minutes, so it's not a genre I really get. This doesn't seem too bad at what it is, though, in terms of responsiveness and feel. The weird thing is it only seems to use two buttons, which produce various types of attacks and blocks/dodges when used together with directions. A neutral attack produces a jab, Forward+Attack is a straight (slower but stronger), Back+Attack is a hook ( even slower & stronger, shorter range), etc. The only issue with this is that it's easy to throw a straight when you want to jab because you're trying to get closer and hit.

I've also got the two SNES Super Turrican and the NES Super Turrican lined up. When I was in high school, I owned the SNES Super Turrican. I never finished it. I recall not liking the level designs much, and I think it becomes quite difficult early on. I remember enjoy its OST a whole lot though. There's quite a few games related to this manga/animes series. I guess not too many are good though? I have read that Ashita no Joe 2: The Anime Super Remix on PS2 is supposedly decent. I don't know much about it, other than Capcom developed and published that particular entry.

Looking forward to your thoughts on these. I can't get into the NES one much, but on a technical level it is pretty cool and it's one of those games that was designed, programmed, and composed by one man: Manfred Trenz.

Y'all gonna keep talkin' about Turrican, and it will force me to play one of them. Still gotta finish Deus Ex first, though. Honestly, while I definitely like what's here (and it becomes far more intuitive once you get past the tutorials and figure out what and what doesn't work in stealth), but it probably could have used a little trimming here and there.
