Picked back up my play in Phantasy Star Ø tonight. I finished the fourth dungeon and boss. At one point I had three AI party members going along with my own avatar, definitely felt like I was playing with other people. I'm over halfway done from what I've read. I'm still enjoying this a whole lot more than I did Phantasy Star Online.

It's a shame since I expected to like Turok 2 more another time around, with its extra sci-fi focus too... but I think Turok 1 was simpler and better for it.
I agree. I actually thought Turok 2 was much more of a Metroidvania kind of game for a variety of reasons. The levels/worlds felt wildly different stylistically from one another - à la Metroid - and the game often wants you to go back to those worlds once you acquire new powers in order to free all the hostages, unlock new skills, etc. It's a well put together game with a lot of great things about it, but it gets very tiring very soon in a way Exhumed (another metroidvania FPS) never did to me. Turok 1 comes with a light hub based world design akin to Quake rather than the convoluted, byzantine stuff from HeXen. Turok 3 is completely linear... it's the N64 the poor man's Half-Life.

But I spent and enjoyed a fair amount of time playing split-screen multiplayer battles with it. Turok 3 was good in that regard. Although not as good at split-screen shout outs as Turok: Rage Wars was.

Although not as good at split-screen shout outs as Turok: Rage Wars was. Yeah, that came out around the time multiplayer-only shooters became cool, so it was the closest thing to a N64 response to the Quake 3/Unreal Tournament phenomenon. And if anyone is wondering, Turok 2007 is... decent. It looks exactly and does exactly what you'd expect from an UnrealEngine 3 shooter from the late 00s, but it does so a bit more competently and less obnoxiously than I expected. So yeah, decent.

I meant to say "shoot outs" not "shout outs". But a roommate and I certainly shouted out loud a lot playing Rage Wars back in 2000. So that works too.
For as ho-hum of a single player machine as the N64 was, it certainly was killer for local multiplayer. All my best memories of the N64 are multiplayer related, especially with the split-screen FPS stuff like the Turok games, Perfect Dark, GoldenEye 007, games of that ilk. I do not care for together alone online gaming at all, but I'm always down for local multiplayer.
Good to hear Turok 2008 isn't terrible. I own an unplayed copy of that on 360, certainly wouldn't be hard to be better than its predecessor Turok: Evolution.

Oh yeah, Turok 2008, I mixed up the release year. Turok Evolution was so bad I literally erased it out of my memories and you just reminded me of it, even though I played the whole thing.

My friends and I put so much time in GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. We finally switched for whatever reason to Red Faction II around 2006/2007 or so, but even then N64 multiplayer was a mainstay in our group.

I wasn't doubting anyone here, I think several people showed some disdain towards Tomb Raider: Underworld.
After playing some yesterday and today, I finished up the first level, Mediterranean Sea. Of the ~7 or so TR's I've played including this one, I can say without hesitation this was by far the worst TR level I've ever played.
And somehow, everything about this newer engine and the design so far feels awful coming off of Legend and Anniversary. Think of anything. The fundamentals from jumping, platform ledge grab detection, the combat, deciphering what you can even grab or jump towards with this new gloss of paint, etc. It's all extremely rough. The fall damage is atrocious. In one part I kept dying from a little jump off of one of those horizontal poles Lara usually spins around for a jump... I simply wasn't timing the jump to the next ledge EXACTLY PERFECT so I was missing it and falling a measly ~10 feet below killed her.
The second level opens up with Lara... on a boat surrounded by water... again.
Not a good impression at all so far. Yikes.
The biggest sin is probably not being able to manually reload her dual pistols like you could in Legend/Anniversary. It just looked and felt good. I hate how slow and weak they are now too.

Haha! I couldn’t get into Hexen, either. I wanted to so badly, but no matter how much time I spent playing it, it felt like doing math homework. @tsumuri Yeah, it was okay. I got the PC version on clearance from Gamestop for $5 and played it on my Intel Core Duo/Geforce 9800 PC. It was worth $5! Ex I played this soooo much in the early 2000’s! The graphics looked like trash, but it was so addictive and fun.

Xeogred: I still enjoyed Underworld, but yes, it sure is janky.
