4 was huge, but when 5 really blew up in late 2016 and was still being all the rage in 2017, I decided to go down a different series...
I still don't regret it. Kazuma must have cyborg muscles to hit so hard so casually. Or maybe it's just that (ex-)yakuza spirit.

Putting down Eternal Darkness after about 8 hours. Probably for good or for a few years. Not awful, but it's not doing much for me. The game switches through characters constantly - you play a character for about 1 hour in their time period, then they get killed in a cutscene and you move onto the next character. They're completely forgettable, included the supposed 'main character'. The sanity meter is just a weak gimmick and doesn't hide the fact that I feel no tension in this game since you can easily kill any monster with ever recharging magic/melee weapons. You're also supposed to play through the same 10-hour campaign three times to get the true ending, yeah no. Story is textbook Lovecraft. Quite a disappointment.
Putting down Siren for good or for now. Atmosphere and music are really something, but it's clunky and focuses way too much on stealth for my taste - well, too much for a survival horror game with its survival horror clunkiness. Especially since you can't see a thing due to the fog - that was done intentionally so to force the player to use 'sightjack' and see through the enemies' eyes, might be a cool mechanic but I found it clunky and not smooth at all.

Yeah Siren was kind of torturous to play. I didn't get very far.
I still think about giving Blood Curse a shot, but it still has the sightjack gimmick. Maybe it smoothed things out but I guess the gameplay still looks pretty similar...

I agree that the combat in Eternal Darkness was pretty easy. I didn't mind the switching characters, though. I definitely didn't beat it three times, however. Forget that mess.

They say Blood Curse got the gameplay right but ruined the story/atmosphere. I might give Siren another try because the setting intrigues me, but if I end up liking it, it'll be in spite of its gameplay.

I've never played these, but I read reviews for them, and watched Youtube videos of them, and I decided I had no interest in playing them. So your dismissing of both these games isn't surprising unfortunately. I mean yeah ED had the "sanity effects", but that kind of parlor trick doesn't exactly have legs. I do enjoy reading your thoughts on all these sixth gen horror games though. Have you considered either of these?:

I remember playing a demo version of Primal back in the day. It's a sort of Tomb Raider with a gothic horror aesthetic, I actually wanted to recommend that to Xeogred. I'd also like to play it myself but emulation for it seems iffy.
I should give a fair shake to Ghosthunter, although that sounds about as close to an unlicensed Ghostbusters game as it gets. Both games are from SCE Cambridge Studio, same people who made C-12: Final Resistance - pretty much an unlicensed Terminator game for the PS1. Oh yeah, the MediEvil series as well - couldn't get it into it last time I tried though.

Looks pretty interesting. Went ahead and ordered it along with Extermination and The Thing.

I've never played Primal, but I did play Ghosthunter once. I remember Ghosthunter having above average graphics, but for some reason I expected the game to be more serious. It's not, it's very campy like Ghostbusters, but not nearly as charming. A lot of reviewers liked it back in the day though, so your opinion may be more positive than mine was.

I didn't use to care, but I need to start paying mind to game length on howlongtobeat and all that, it's pretty daft of me to put 20 hours into a game and then get completely burnt out because I still got 20 more hours to go. I suppose 15-20 hours is the limit for me, can't invest more time than that in a single game.
Well, that does put a veto on most RPGs and open world games.
