Xeogred@tsumuri isn't wrong that Warrior Within isn't dramatically different than Sands of Time gameplay-wise, but it has a completely different tone. A tone you might resonate with more than SoT. Or maybe not, don't know till you try!

I was playing some Luminous Arc the other day. The story is anime nonsense, the gameplay is as plain as SRPGs get - but it's... fine. Grinding not required so far, but then I remembered Ex complaining about chapter 14 being a huge difficulty spike - pretty much everyone who played the game mentions it. Grinding has always been my major gripe with SRPGs, even more so than in regular JRPGs because, as I see it, getting your party stronger by grinding runs counter to what I like in this kind of games, which is to overcome challenges exclusively through tactics. So yeah, probably won't continue playing this.
Speaking of which, I might be tackling a giant JRPG soon or continue my horror spree.

You devoured SPRG's... JRPG's next?

I remembered Ex complaining about chapter 14 being a huge difficulty spike It ended up being that one particular chapter (14) was super difficult, but every chapter before and after was a piece of cake. Regardless, Luminous Arc is still a 7/10 at best. There are certainly better SRPGs to spend your time on. For example...

You devoured SPRG's... JRPG's next? Not gonna happen, in fact, I take back my words. Suddenly, I don't feel so hot about RPing a Japanese highschooler for 150+ hours. Good job porting that game, Sega, though. ARPGs and SRPGs are probably more up my alley nowadays. ...I think you might enjoy Dark Half. Yeah, I think so too. Making a note.

Did Persona (4?) almost get you? I don't think there's any super fans of them here.

Suddenly I don't feel so hot about RPing a Japanese highschooler for 150+ hours. So no Persona 4 right now 'eh? I'm more into SRPGs in general these days myself. I was watching videos of Suikoden Tactics this morning, and that one looks pretty fun.
Don't get me wrong, I still like JRPGs on occasion, but more so older entries that I missed in previous generations, rather than recent JRPGs of the modern design persuasion.

I always liked the tarot cards and occult stuff in the Persona series, but I don't feel like going through 150+ hours of highschool activities, field trips and adolescent social interactions. That's like a part time job.

4 was huge, but when 5 really blew up in late 2016 and was still being all the rage in 2017, I decided to go down a different series...
I still don't regret it.

Years ago I bought a Vita initially for my interest in Personal 4 Golden, which was a Vita exclusive for a long time. I had a close friend back then, who swore Persona 4 was amazing. He beat the game twice IIRC. And he convinced me to give the game a shot (to this day I have yet to do so however). However, this particular guy also had zero life, and so a game like P4 was ideal to feel that empty void. I don't mean that in an asshat way either, because I know that sounds like an asshat thing to say. But seriously, if you're going to beat a 70-100 hour long JRPG in less than two weeks, you've got some serious free time going on. He had that kind of free time going on, because he was a widower with no kids, and no social life, and no hobbies outside video games (and anime). I think that's why he gravitated to the virtual social life that Persona offers. Plus for him high school was the best time of his life, so being able to virtually simulate a high school life again was ideal. I haven't talked to this guy in a long time, but I did see him post on a forum being really excited when Persona 5 released, so I guess he's still living that hikikomori life. Whatever, different strokes for different folks! I'm not judging. Some of us want to be high schoolers chasing Scoobie Doo villians, some of us what to be demons bringing destruction upon the world. Thankfully Atlus offers both fantasies.
