^ Yeah, that's why in retrospect, I'm kind of bummed Team Ninja didn't get take another shot at an Other M sequel. The level design leaves a lot to be desired, it's one of the most linear/simplistic Metroid's in that sense. But it was still really freaking fun and they were onto something. Looked killer too for the Wii.
Ziggy : Metroid is one of the apexes of gaming for me in general, lol. My loyalty to Nintendo at this point here in 2024 is primarily for: Metroid, Zelda, and Xenoblade. I have a lot of fun with Mario still and their other stuff, but yeah those are the big three now. The Metroid series is just pure bliss.
FromSoftware are my current favorite developers, I would seriously go crazy slapping a deluge of 10/10's on all these Souls games left and right. Have replayed them a lot. Demon's Souls (OG/PS3) and Elden Ring are the current favorites now for me. So here's my suggestion and it might make others bat an eye, but maybe put Dark Souls on the shelf and try another one. It sounds like you've attempted Dark Souls maybe more than just once. I started with Demon's Souls and honestly feel like I went through the entire game, not exactly knowing what I was doing, but I clearly fell in love with it at some point. My first full run felt like pure luck, was using spears and such a weird build and playstyle. This was long before the series blew up so I couldn't really even find any online aid if I wanted, which I think saps the fun out of these (I'm also really stubborn and never summon help for bosses haha). But I say don't feel guilty summoning other players and engaging in the mechanics the devs put in there to your own will. Back to my main point, I still think the original Demon's Souls is pure magic, but it's beautifully rough around the edges and has some mean spirited stuff in there haha. Dark Souls 2 I think is the easiest and most accessible, yet the DLC's are insanely tough if you make it that far. And then I see some people actually think 2 is the hardest, so I don't know. It's all subjective. Dark Souls 3 is the cleanest and most refined game, naturally up to that point. Maybe jumping into that one would be weird though, I'd perhaps suggest Bloodborne before that idea. Sekiro doesn't play like these at all and is extremely different, it actually gave Souls veterans like myself some insane whiplash since it goes against so much of my knowledge from those games and the combat in them haha.
tl;dr, give another Souls game a shot next time if you still have an itch for them and I hope one clicks with you. Then you got a deluge of pure gold to play.
A quick off the top of my head ranking of these for me:
- Demon's Souls
- Elden Ring
- Dark Souls
- Dark Souls 2
- Dark Souls 3
- Sekiro
- Bloodborne
Something like that and Bloodborne is still a 10/10. It's tough ordering these gold bricks on my shelf. Why I love the mainline Souls games the most though, they typically offer more environmental variety and feel a bit more epic/bigger in scope. Like you're really going on some huge journey in another world. And they're usually the more flexible ones in terms of player builds, equipment, etc.
