Yeah, it opens up eventually. Good time to start that up, too - we're about to roll into 7th gen anyway for Club Retro.

Possibly not, though, haha - there's always the sub-theme, which I haven't decided yet. I might couple 7th gen with the arcade suggestion, which would get us a lot of variety in the month, even if they wouldn't combine super well. I want to do "Skies and Seas" for July/August, but I think it would pair better with 7th gen instead of 1st/2nd gen. Or I could just make an executive decision that month to swap in either 5th/6th gen, which would also fit the theme well. We shall see! And in retrospect... maybe I could do toei's Guns/Swords suggestion for next month, which would also pair incredibly well with 7th gen.

Aren't PSP and DS considered 7th gen? If so, I've played plenty of 7th gen. On consoles, well... I beat Blue Dragon using my brother's 360. Also Final Fantasy IV: The After Years on a friend's Wii.
I do have one big PSP game I want to play soon, so it could be during those next two months. It might also be time to try some of the 7th gen console games I bought PC ports of and see if my laptop can handle them.
In the meanwhile, I just finished Disc 3 of Legend of Dragoon. Probably had most of the big reveals in the game right at the end. I remember there was this one guy on the HG101 boards who was always talking about awful this game was, and how stupid the some plot twists were. But I've liked all the big story moments so far, even if the ordinary stuff in between is less exciting. I think it's a nice RPG. Thankfully the encounter rate is pretty low, otherwise the slow combat would've been hell. It does make the boss battles drag a bit though, and there's a lot. I still kind of like them - they're the highlight of turn-based RPG gameplay, after all - but I wish they went faster. And while I do think the timing-based combos add to the turn-based formula, I still can't perform any of the more advanced additions. I find the timing really weird and the visual cues not-so-great. There's an Accessory for sale in one of the early towns that automatically performs the combo you've chosen if you have it equipped. It's very expensive, though, and for some reason you never seem to accumulate any money in this game. You always have enough to buy what you need, but no way to farm big money for any special expensive item as regular enemies drop very little. My dream since early on in the game has been to buy one of those.
So now there's only one disc left. I've been taking breaks between every disc (just a bit over 10 hours each so far), in part so I don't get tired of the slow combat. But I won't make it a long break this time, because I want to see the ending now, and with everything fresh in mind.

toei : Are you emulating Legend of Dragoon? I wonder if bumping up the CPU speed will make the battles smoother/faster (without fast forwarding the whole game, like the audio and stuff). Worth a shot maybe? That's why I fell off the game back in the day, especially the combo-strings. I remember normal battles just got longer and longer as the game went. But it's a charming game to look back on, I do want to give it another look someday.
EDIT: The setting is in: Console, CPU Emulation. Maybe overclocking it might do something good. lol, totally random idea though.

Ex I did finish it, did you forget? Back in January. Reviewed it and everything. I really, really liked it. Even loved it, maybe, despite a few hiccups (like the ending making no sense at all). Legend of Dragoon has its fans and was generally well-reviewed. Some of the hate was just goofy Squaresoft fans who felt they needed to tear the wannabe Final Fantasy-killer apart. Some of it was based on the real flaws it does have. But it's one of the better PSX RPGs for sure. Xeogred I don't believe so. Don't emulators lock speed in to get as close to possible to the console? I don't think you can affect the speed of just one part of the game. You could fast-forward through fights manually by assigning Fast-Forward to your controller in the hotkeys menu, if you want. Really, what makes them so slow is mostly the long attack animations you can't skip. The combos aren't that long to look at compared to magic, especially the bosses'. But battles definitely end up being longer when you miss your combo inputs. At least you can set the Dragoon transformations to a quick version in the options. It takes a while to start each fight because it does this rotation around the battlefield, too. Again, I'd hate it if the encounter rate was high, but it's not, and you can even cancel a few with items. But later in the game, many dungeons have two bosses, and after two of them I always need to take a little break.

My theory is that if the exploration bits are pre-rendered backdrops, the battles being 3D might run a little different, rendering, etc. But yeah I'm no programmer and don't really understand it all haha. Mapping a button to fast-forward could be useful for situations like this game.
The pause menu theme sticks with me forever. It's rare and awesome when a game does that:

toei - I forgot. We all randomly drop so many games (including myself) it's hard to remember sometimes what was and wasn't finished. Now I'm interested in what PSP game you're talking about. But I'm willing to wait for the surprise.
