Right, sorry - I meant "good" sequel haha There is another Blaster Master that's in a (somewhat) 16-bit style: Blaster Master Overdrive (WiiWare 2010) I can't say if it's "good" or not, I never beat it. It's balls hard, I can say that.

- What excellent 8bit era game do you wish got a good 16bit sequel? Kickmaster for NES.

I did end up beating Overdrive. It's not amazing, but it is solid. Feels like a cheap Flash game in spots, just because of the budget presentation, and there are some bad control decisions that are less an issue if you emulate. The bosses also get very bullet-hell.

Ex I forgot about the WiiWare game. Should I play that first, or jump right into the Blaster Master Zero series, now that I've (unbelievably to me lol) beat the NES game?

I'd personally just jump straight into BMZ - they're much better than Overdrive. If you wanted to mess with a side game outside of BMZ, I'd go with Blasting Again on PSX.

If you want to challenge yourself play Overdrive. If you just want to have fun play Blaster Master Zero.

I'd be shocked if Overdrive is harder than Zero 3.
I'll check Overdrive out someday, but the sound effects for the tank sections are a serious ear-sore. That and the look in general is why I never checked it out. Just made me feel sad as a Blaster Master fan. Thankfully Inti Creates saved the day with a full fledged epic Zero trilogy.

Oh, let me tell you, there's no question Overdrive was harder than Zero 3. BMZ3 could be difficult in spots, but those bosses are just a whole different level in Overdrive.

Here are three questions:
What modern game do you wish got a retro entry? I wish Yakuza got a 16-bit style game. Sega really fucked up with Streets of Kamurocho - it sounded amazing, and it ended up being a romhack of Streets of Rage 2's first stage with bad sprites. It was such a letdown.
What non-video game franchise could make for a great video game?
What setting do you think should be used for a game (either more often or for the first time)?
I'll come back and answer some of those later.
