This thread is exactly what you think.
-
I'll start with these random questions:
Do you go through periods where you game heavily, but then don't game at all for days, weeks, months? Or are you always consistent?
Have your gaming tastes changed at all as you've gotten older?
Do your hands get sweaty if you're playing a stressful game?
If you could magically have a sequel to any game franchise, which franchise would you choose? But you can only choose ONE.
Name five old games you should have beat by now?
-
I'll answer my own questions later. Feel free to add your own questions, that's the point.

- What's your favorite sound chip?
- What's your favorite controller?
- 8bit vs 16bit?
- What 32/64bit game do you think has the best aesthetic?
- Was Luigi cooler with white overalls and a green shirt? I was thinking about that other day, how much I loved his NES color scheme.
- What excellent 8bit era game do you wish got a good 16bit sequel? For me it's a shame Sunsoft fell off after the NES a bit and we didn't get a cool SNES Blaster Master. Instead, we got that weird Genesis game...

I'm fairly consistent, usually only taking a break of a couple of days if I take one at all. 2. They've only hardened, if anything lol. I play similar games to what I always have, generally. 3. Yes. Doesn't take much. 4. Shining Force, easy. 5. Oh, uh... Shining Force III parts 2/3 (lol), Suikoden I/II, Xenogears, there's plenty more too haha - What's your favorite sound chip?
- What's your favorite controller?

For me it's a shame Sunsoft fell off after the NES a bit and we didn't get a cool SNES Blaster Master. Instead, we got that weird Genesis game... 1. SNES. I know it's all samples, but I just think that system has a tendency to sound fantastic. 2. Gamecube. Most comfortable controller I've ever held. Sure, it's not great for every genre, but I'm lucky since the ones I tend to play are fine on the Gamecube controller lol 3. 16 bit, though I love both. 4. Majora's Mask comes to mind first, mainly because it does an oppressive atmosphere very well. I'm sure there are better looking games I'm not thinking of at the moment, though. 5. Lol yes, now that you mention it. 6. Ooh, a 16 bit Blaster Master would be cool. For me, it'd be Crystalis - we never got any sequel to that, but that game was already looking and sounding fantastic on NES, so imagine if SNK made one for Neo Geo or something, hot dang... My random questions: 1. Are there any genres that used to work for you on old systems, but got less interesting to you as new games in that genre came out?
2. What's your favorite 16 bit RPG?
3. What's your favorite handheld game from the 90s?
4. First game that comes to mind - best pixel art?
5. Least favorite retro controller?

>Do you go through periods where you game heavily, but then don't game at all for days, weeks, months? Or are you always consistent?I didn't use to until the past two years. I used to play every day if I was able. Nowadays I will sometimes go a few days or a week without playing anything. This is due to having more hobbies than I used to, and also just being too tired at night at times to feel like playing anything. Maybe it's a getting older thing. But I also still have spates where I will play fervently for weeks on end if I'm invested in a really good RPG for example. >Have your gaming tastes changed at all as you've gotten older?A little bit. I'm not as crazy about FPS as I used to be, and I don't care much for point 'n' click adventure games nearly as much either. Meanwhile my appreciation for shorter games like shmups and platformers has increased. I still love RPGs but modern ones bother me when they are over 40 hours long. 40+ hour long RPGs I call "give up on life RPGs". >Do your hands get sweaty if you're playing a stressful game?Yes. Ridiculously sweaty. Like when I was playing Dark Souls earlier this year, fighting hard bosses I'd keep a cotton shirt in my lap to wipe off my sweaty hands. If I'm playing a chill easy game that doesn't happen though. I've got these nervous hands man! >If you could magically have a sequel to any game franchise, which franchise would you choose? But you can only choose ONE.Another Kyle Hyde game and it's not even close. >Name five old games you should have beat by now?Blaster Master, Zelda II, Mega Man V, Mega Man VI, Final Fantasy VIII >What's your favorite sound chip?Man it's gonna have to be the heavenly Yamaha YMF297 (final PC-98 FM audio chip). >What's your favorite controller? The DualShock series in general. I don't care what you crazy cats say, these things are comfy. >8bit vs 16bit?That's like "who's your favorite child" level hard. I suppose 16-bit overall. >What 32/64bit game do you think has the best aesthetic? For 2D Symphony of the Night, for 3D Vagrant Story. >Was Luigi cooler with white overalls and a green shirt?White overalls. >What excellent 8bit era game do you wish got a good 16bit sequel?Bionic Commando>Are there any genres that used to work for you on old systems, but got less interesting to you as new games in that genre came out?In general modern shmups don't hold up to legit vintage classics.
>What's your favorite 16 bit RPG?Phantasy Star IV by miles. >What's your favorite handheld game from the 90s?Gargoyle's Quest>First game that comes to mind - best pixel art?Final Fantasy VI is what first came to mind. Not sure if that would be my final answer though.
>Least favorite retro controller?
Magnavox Odyssey's is uh, lacking to say the least.

Alright, I'll start with Ex 's questions and move through as I get time. - Do you go through periods where you game heavily, but then don't game at all for days, weeks, months? Or are you always consistent?I'm relatively consistent, but I definitely wax and wane with serious effort into games. As of the last... well, almost year, I've not consistently been putting in the time. Just a lot of real-life stuff keeping me busier, and I'm often blasted enough that I spend more time blabbering on message boards or cruising the web than actually gaming. I'm sure I'll get back in the groove soon. - Have your gaming tastes changed at all as you've gotten older?
Definitely. When I was younger, while my eyes weren't solely on RPGs, they were absolutely my bread and butter. That being said, I look back and there are many RPGs I didn't really try to finish, so I clearly had at least some level of discernment with those versus other games. But I give a lot more respect now to shorter, punchier games. I used to not love games like Contra or Jackal, but love them now. ARPGs have also become more preferred, outside of the best turn-based games like Dragon Quest and the like. - Do your hands get sweaty if you're playing a stressful game?Sometimes, yes. I don't know exactly why it does it sometimes and not others, but it's a thing. - If you could magically have a sequel to any game franchise, which franchise would you choose? But you can only choose ONE.
Only one?! Woof. Well, Bionic Commando is great but you've got that covered. The next two that pop into my mind are The Guardian Legend and Demon's Crest. I think... I'll go with DC. - Name five old games you should have beat by now?Let's see... - Shining Force III- Baldur's Gate I/II- Ultima VII- Descent III- Shadowrun (SNES)

a 16 bit Blaster Master would be cool Meant to mention this earlier, there is a 16-bit BM series entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaster_Master_2Not saying it's "cool" or not, I've not played it enough to know.

It doesn't have a good reputation and I've never gotten that far into myself. Honestly, it seems like an okay game... just a C-grade level follow up to the NES classic.
I would like to see it through to the end sometime though.

It's not very good. It's not even an actual Sunsoft joint - it was developed by Software Creations.

- What's your favorite sound chip?Harder to weigh in on than you'd think. There are objectively better sound chips, and then there are those that we just like the sound of overall. For example, I'd wager most of the fifth generation can effectively do anything they want via compressed audio streams or CD, so I'm just going to toss them out of the picture. Ex posted a really good one - high-level FM synthesis is excellent. If we go purely on capability from the 16-bit era outside of PCs, though, I suppose from a technical point of view the SNES takes it, because it can effectively recreate the more "chippy" sounds through its samples. But I adore the NES sound chip when used correctly (see Konami, Natsume, Sunsoft, Tim Follin, etc.), and the Genesis is also straight fire in the hands of a skilled composer/programmer. In the end, I think NES would be my sentimental favorite. - What's your favorite controller?
Also harder to answer than you'd think, but I think just from a general form factor and design approach, the SNES pad takes it. While there are advantages to the six-button layout Sega adopted, those L/R triggers are more intuitive in some contexts. And I suppose then I'd need to give credit to the DualShock, although I don't love the d-pad on most of those. The 360 also has a great controller, outside of the d-pad. So digital inputs = SNES, analog probably 360. - 8bit vs 16bit?
Once again, it really depends. For RPGs, it's 16-bit all the way. For platformers... I actually think there's a strong argument for the NES and its style of platformers over the 16-bit systems, at least in aggregate. But overall I'd probably take 16-bit. - What 32/64bit game do you think has the best aesthetic? The obvious ones are those that use sprite art heavily, since they aged well. Symphony of the Night, Legend of Mana, SaGa Frontier 2, and Valkyrie Profile all come to mind. As far as 3D titles go, Vagrant Story looks absolutely fantastic. Super Mario 64 has a sort of timeless look to it - very clean and colorful. Metal Gear Solid set a high water mark for how cinematic games of that era could be. - Was Luigi cooler with white overalls and a green shirt? I was thinking about that other day, how much I loved his NES color scheme.
Man, I loved how Luigi looked in the NES game. For the longest, I thought he was way cooler than Mario, and always rooted for him. - What excellent 8bit era game do you wish got a good 16bit sequel? For me it's a shame Sunsoft fell off after the NES a bit and we didn't get a cool SNES Blaster Master. Instead, we got that weird Genesis game...Well, I threw it out there earlier, but a 16-bit follow-up to The Guardian Legend would have been straight fire.
