Yeah haha...
Easy answer though, it was my comfort food in between jobs when I took a few months off last year. Played it daily and hit the max multiplayer level or something. Every few years I'm itching for a good FPS multiplayer rotation.
The campaign was cool at the time but pretty damn forgettable already. Then I played Elden Ring, and Microsoft's main IP with infinite money (pun intended?) felt like a half baked C grade indie game in comparison. 343 is just never going to be that great of a developer. They've had 3 shots at making Halo really have a comeback and it fails every time. Nothing but gripes about how piss poor their long term support and updates have been for the multiplayer too. It doesn't have a lot of content and that's probably why I eventually fell off, got sick of the same dozen or so maps.

259 hours of DOOM II? How the hell man. I guess you played every single WAD in existence for it.

259 hours of DOOM II? How the hell man. I guess you played every single WAD in existence for it. To be honest, barely. Maybe two dozen MegaWAD's (~30 maps like a full campaign) give or take over the years. But there's dozens released every year still going strong. Sometimes I go over to Doomworld forums when the mood strikes. But I can easily see how there's some people out there that probably just play custom Doom wads/mods and nothing else in between. The content is definitely there. lol, kudos to Carmack and company making an immortal game.
I think it would probably be more in the 500-1000 range too. But there were several years in the 2010's where I didn't have Steam tracking the playtime. You had to do a few tricks to get it to point to another source port or other stuff that I used. But now the new launcher and all works fine with using any source port/mods I want. I like GZDoom.
I pride it being the #1 ... but another replay of Elden Ring could be closing in on it. Guess I need to get some more DOOM in! I didn't play much this year sadly. Just these:
DOOM WADS: - Doom: Shotgun Symphony (PC)[UV/C,~2h28mh] - Fun super detailed E1, but better for D2? - Doom 2: Revolution! (PC)[UV/C,~3h02m] - Doomcute first half, gets boring/too easy later half. - Doom 2: New Doom Community Project (PC)[UV/PS,~5hm10m) - Mostly bad. 1/5. Only liked ~10 maps or so.

Dang Ys IX was so good Sarge didn't need anymore long JRPGs in 2022. I've got to get to Ys VIII in 2023 at least.

In no particular order, this year I’ve beaten
Super Mario Bros U Deluxe Pokémon Legends Arceus Pokémon Violet Breath of the Wild under special conditions (master quest / no shrines beaten except the four in the great plateau) Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Limbo (replay, first time on Steam) Sonic Forces Ys 1 (Steam, easy) Ys 1 (Steam, normal) Ys 1 (mobile, easy) Ys 2 (Steam, easy) Ys 2 (mobile, easy) Ys Origin (Yunica, normal; normal is the default from here on out) Ys: The Oath in Felghana (Steam) Ys: Memories of Celceta (Steam) Ys IV: Mask of the Sun (SFC) Ys V (SFC) Ys VI (Steam) Ys Seven (Steam) Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (Genesis) Dragon Quest (Famicom Japanese) Dragon Warrior (GBC)
I also played a lot of Elden Ring and Ocarina of Time (randomized and not) but haven’t beaten them. I have beaten Ocarina of Time multiple times in the past, however.
I really shouldn’t play so many video games. It’s too easy to plop down and play a game after work, though.
This was my year of Ys. I had already played OiF on PSP a long time ago and enjoyed it greatly. Then I tried Ys 1 and I couldn’t figure it out and later on I tried the demo for Ys 8 on Switch and didn’t get into it. Something just clicked this year, though. I went from playing one Ys game to playing most of them! It has become a quick favorite of mine now.
Aside from Ys, I have to say that I enjoyed the Pokémon games released this year. I wish that Legends Arceus had more time to cook and that Violet had been pushed to next year, however. As fun as they are, they could have glitches and design flaws hammered out with a little more time, especially SV which released far too soon after LA. Some of the staff between them are the same people, so you can definitely see how the quality was affected. I hope they take their time making the next one.
Oh, so I don’t remember if I did it earlier this year or at the tail end of last year but I decided to play Breath of the Wild without visiting any shrines other than the four you’re forced to go to at the beginning of the game. The rules were just no shrines. I could still go to the divine beasts and I could use any equipment although I think I started off with the intention of only using Hylian outfits. This was all done on normal mode. It was not entirely easy but it was doable and I had fun. So, a bit later (definitely this year by this point) I did the whole thing again on master quest mode. It helped to have played master quest normally beforehand several years prior since it helped me prepare for Ganon who going to be even more difficult with how few hearts I had. This kind of challenge is what cooking was put into the game for. Extra hearts, recovery, attack up… I didn’t necessarily have a lot of equipment, either. Likely just had a handful of weapon slots upgraded or something and a few pieces of armor without any upgrades. Enemies in master quest heal over time so this was the main thing I was worried about. Anyways, I beat Ganon under these restrictions and I felt pretty good after. I tried to do the DLC stuff after and only managed to beat Windblight Ganon like this. Unfortunately, the blight rematches limit your inventory so I’m not sure how you’re supposed to do them even with max upgrades. I might return (maybe when I’m done with Ys and if TotK hasn’t come out yet).
Regarding Ys Origin: I read that I should play through the third scenario but I wanted to catch up with the series. I’ll likely revisit Ys Origin. I did sample Hugo’s scenario but it felt similar to Yunica’s so I lost interest then and there.
I want to not spend so much time with video games next year and instead focus on my own projects.

MoulinoskiYour year of Ys indeed. As for Origin I love that game but I only beat it once using Yunica. I didn't see the point in replaying the entire game multiple times, just to use different characters. From what I read very little changes so not worth the effort for my tastes. Based on how much you enjoy Zelda and Ys, I highly recommend playing Brandish: The Dark Revenant on PSP. You might also enjoy Xanadu Next on PC. An admirable goal. I love video games just as much as everybody. I think this can be a healthy hobby with moderation. But moderation is vital. One negative aspect I've learned about video games, after playing them for over 40 years now, is they provide a false sense of accomplishment. Don't get me wrong, it is an accomplishment to beat a video game. Especially to beat a difficult one. But that type of accomplishment is not analog to an accomplishment in real life. Hence my use of the phrase "false sense of accomplishment". A recent personal example. I beat Dark Souls this year, and am proud of that "accomplishment". But I don't consider that accomplishment to be equivalent to even what I did last wednesday. Last wednesday I went hiking with my dog through very difficult terrain, trying to figure out how to reach an old bench I saw in the woods at a nature reserve years ago. This bench sat in a different part of the woods across a large lake, far off from where the trails take you. I saw that bench years ago, and it had always bothered me that I didn't know how to reach it. So last wednesday my dog and I hiked off the trails, through thick woods with very challenging topography, around the lake and its tributaries, until finally after much effort, I reached and touched that long forgotten (very old) concrete bench. Now THAT felt like a REAL accomplishment, because it was real. As a side effect of doing so, I found two cellar holes and an old well, which may be useful for my metal detecting endeavors. I also got to see the most impressive beaver dam I've ever seen, and a frozen creek that was 40' wide and half a mile long. Being in Georgia, a frozen creek of that magnitude is not something you see every day (or even in a lifetime) here. If I hadn't gotten off my couch and out into the woods, and instead played video games all day, I never would have seen any of that. Moral of the story is; If you want to beat real life bosses, and get real life rewards, play real life more often. It does take more effort sure. Because unfortunately, your brain's chemical reward dispensers can't tell the difference between false accomplishment and real accomplishment. But bet your ass, your sense of regret eventually will.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with the false sense of accomplishments that video games provide. That’s why I want to ween myself off them for a bit. That, and I feel like I’ve been constantly “sleepy” without really feeling sleepy most of my days for a while now. I feel like it’s an effect of too much screen time.
I actually have Brandish for PSP loaded on my Steam Deck to sample. I didn’t know it ever existed until recently. I also have the PSP version of Trails in the Sky to sample as well (if I like it, I’ll likely buy it for Steam). I’ve thought of trying Xanadu Next as well but I felt like I had my hands full with Ys when I found out about it. Heh, so much for weening myself off video games.

Heh, so much for weening myself off video games. The idea is balance, not abstinence.
