We start 2023 with the dual-month theme concept. This means the theme carries through two consecutive months, prolonging the amount of time members have to participate. The theme for January and February is "Second Generation Gaming". That is playing video games that released during the second generation of this medium. The "second generation" is roughly defined as occurring from 1976 to 1984.
Second generation gaming platforms:

Is SG-1000 considered second gen now?? I always found it borderline. It was released the same day(!) as the Famicom but died quickly and most of the games are ColecoVision-esque, as is the hardware itself.
In any event I'm debating sticking to the tried and true 2600 or switching over to something weird like the TI-99/4A.

Is SG-1000 considered second gen now? I consider it borderline, but most of the second generation articles claim it is, so I included it. Of all the generations this year, I'm actually most excited for second gen. This was the generation I began gaming in. The Atari 2600 was the first console I owned. So I did play a lot of Atari 2600 games due to everybody having one, loads of games were available from friends at school. However, beyond the Atari 2600, my second gen gaming experience is limited. I've beaten some old Apple II, Tandy, and DOS games. Have played some of the other second gen consoles too. But there's a mass quantity of stuff I've not played from the second gen. And since these games are simpler, you can have a meaningful play session in a short time span. Most "pick up and play" of all the gens.

I'm guessing it's also because the hardware is very similar to the Colecovision. It may have released contemporary with the Famicom, but it was leagues behind.

Anything like Adventures of Lolo, or Nuts & Milk out there? Might be the kind of single screen games I dig.

There are lots of single screen platformers. Obviously Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, Mario Bros, and Popeye. But also things like Kangaroo, Beauty & the Beast, Roc 'n Rope, Miner 2049er, BurgerTime, Congo Bongo, Frankenstein's Monster, Joust, Jumpman Junior, and Space Panic.
For more "advanced" platforming there's Jungle Hunt, Keystone Kapers, Pitfall! (plus its sequel), Montezuma's Revenge, and Mountain King.
I'd recommend Kangaroo and Jungle Hunt as super fun accessible ones you can jump right into.

Sounds good. Soooo... is there like a super all-in-one 2nd gen emulator?

The ColecoVision has some cool games. I found some I liked when we did that theme a couple years ago, I'll look up that thread for recommendations. It has games that are starting to feel close to the NES and arcade games from the same era that we grew up with - not single-screen platformers but closer precursors to the games we like. I guess I'll try to mess with some SG-1000 games this time. I've mostly played Golgo 13, it's a really simple game (you're mostly shooting windows on moving trains) but it's kind of fun and addictive. One thing I wanted to say about the SG-1000 being "leagues behind" the Famicom, as Sarge put it - it wasn't so apparent when it launched. All the famous NES games came years later. That first generation of Famicom games wasn't far removed from ColecoVision and SG-1000 games. The Famicom had more technological potential, and then they had the mappers and the chips and whatever else that allowed Nintendo to drag that damn thing for years and years, even as the Master System and PC Engine came out. Xeogred The same multiplatform emulators, I guess. I don't think there's one that specializes in all those platforms. I had picked dedicated CV and Atari 2600 emulators last time. btw, Ex, can we play arcade games from the same eras as those consoles? I might want to mess with a little Moon Patrol again.
