The PS5 is, at least, interesting in an aesthetic sense in how absolutely hideously ugly it is. My take on the question in the title of the thread is "probably." It just won't be by us, or people slightly younger than us. But the people who were little kids when the PS4 came out? They'll absolutely look back on it with nostalgia and go back and buy up old games and hardware and such. It's happened with every generation so far, I see no reason why it doesn't continue, even if we find it hard to believe. People are nostalgic for iPods ffs, when we all have phones that can do what iPods did 1000% better. Why not the PS4 or Xbone? Yeah, this is what my initial thought process was. I actually look back at Tiger handhelds with some fondness despite the Gameboy being much better. We can even emulate (or simulate) those Tiger and Game & Watch handhelds. I don’t see why it wouldn’t be the same for younger kids… But then I thought about how much personality those older devices had versus our current “play stuff” machines. Even the NES, with its “I am kinda like a VHS player minus the VHS” look still has a level of personality that is still getting milked today. The SNES and N64 have distinct looks. The Atari 2600 and the Sega Genesis, the Gameboy and even the DS have a level of personality to their hardware. The PSP is just shy of lacking any thanks to the slight differences to the Gameboy Advance. If any modern hardware may garner any nostalgia, it just be the Switch since it’s so distinct from the others. Even though it’s practically just a tablet, it manages to distinguish itself from your everyday tablet look thanks to the controllers (a look that Chinese hardware companies are trying to ape). Do you feel nostalgic for your old VHS player? That’s how I view the current crop of PlayStation and Xbox hardware.

Moulinoski In terms of console aesthetics, my interest died out around that darned 7th generation. All the PS3 models, all the 360 models, etc. all are boring to me (the Wii is slightly more interesting aesthetically, but not a favorite design of mine in any case). But, that's also when I entered my mid-twenties - a ten year old in 2008 probably looks back at the 360 - bland as it is aesthetically to me - like the product of a bygone age, when design was "good" or whatever we happen to think about the SNES or Genesis or whatever (speaking for myself, here lol). I personally look back at the 360 as the nadir of gaming, not in the sense of library (I played a couple dozen games on that system and had a decent time with them) but in terms of user experience. Every time you turned on the system, you were bombarded with ads - moving ones. MMA, football games, FPSs, all sorts of nonsense I could not care less about (if you did, fine, but I never have) and you could not turn it off. I hated using that thing so much that I haven't touched a Microsoft console since, and doubt I ever will again. At least with Steam I can disable the little popup ad, and any ads I do see are at least frigging video games. I will be completely incapable of understanding nostalgia for that experience, but I bet it will exist (or already does). I have local commercials from the 90s from where I grew up permanently burned into my brain, some of which I think back on fondly, so someone out there probably liked the 360 menu bloat. I'm sure things in this arena have only gotten worse, but the only "current" system I have is a Switch, which is mercifully free of ads on the main menu. But everyone's tastes are different. There are people who think the original Xbox has a cool/good design! I have never understood that, even at the time. But what do I know? I think the original Gameboy has a classic design. I'm sure there are kids who look at it like I've always looked at an 8 track player lol

Why not the PS4 or Xbone? Because PS4 and XB1 games, and especially PS5 and XSX games, are base install discs, rather than having the final build on them. The discs initiate the console to download the latest playable build, or trending forward the game itself, as there's just a fetch installer on the disc. What I'm saying is that in 20-30 years from now, trying to play PS4/5 and XB1/XSX games, is going to be stymied by being unable to download the games from servers that no longer exist.

Ex Eh, I trust the hackers and pirates to figure all that out before then. For example, 3DS games, and their DLC, have already been widely distributed, so I would assume more recent console's output will be as well.

I doubt the Wii U will ever be a true cult console, myself. The Saturn had a cult fanbase when it was active, it didn't just acquire one after. Nintendo usually does well, and Nintendo fans tend to forget their rare few mistakes, like the Virtual Boy.

The Virtual Boy has a bit of a cult fanbase, though (I count myself among them. I love that stupid thing). Prices of used Virtual Boy games are slowly creeping up, as well...

I think they will be based off previous gaming devices.
The DS and PSP libraries can mostly be played on 3DS/Vita yet many people will talk highly about former and say they are better systems than the latter for example. They might of had better overall libraries, but those libraries were backwards compatible (DS physical , PSP digital) so the latter has the benefit of two libraries. The PS4 in general is pretty well regarded so I think it will hold similar to the DS in conversations. Xbox One I think won't hold the same "coolness" mostly because it's games were generally all on PC also. The exclusives really do hold the biggest pull when we look back at older devices. Wii U will probably have some fans but like others said it's library is mostly on Switch now (which will hold its coolness both in form factor, and vibrant color schemes).
Regarding PS5 design, I honestly love it. I have all my old gaming devices on a shelf in a row and everything is a black or gray box that is mostly square/rectangle with sharp or round edges and not very distinctive from one another. The PS5 is distinctive (for better or worse for some). It is large and while I have the space for it in my living room I could see it being a hassle for those that don't.

The exclusives really do hold the biggest pull when we look back at older devices. Hence the fondness we're seeing here for the Virtual Boy. Its entire library remains exclusive IIRC.
