The exclusives really do hold the biggest pull when we look back at older devices. Hence the fondness we're seeing here for the Virtual Boy. Its entire library remains exclusive IIRC. Well, Panic Bomber is much, much better in color, on PC Engine or PSX. But offhand, I think that's it, everything else is pretty exclusive on Virtual Boy.

I like the VB, need to get mine fixed since one of those ribbon cables has become detached. Doggone it, Nintendo, why'd you glue them in place? Wario Land is easily the best game on the system, and I am utterly mystified how they didn't bring it to the 3DS.
As far as the PS4/XB1 goes, y'all are probably right that some kids will likely look back on them with fondness as their first console. But the fact that these systems are basically PCs and have ports of those games elsewhere will reduce their impact. That may also be true of the Wii U, with all the Switch ports, but... I also think the system has a few unique titles that didn't get ported, and there are things I love about it, including the ability to play Wii games and Gamecube if you hack it. It may actually be one of the best systems to hack and use to cover an entire gamut of gaming history.

I managed to fix it myself, but then the cable jostled loose again and the problem reoccurred.

I think if the Wii U ever becomes a retro collector's item, it won't be because of its library, but rather its unique hardware concept. Also the Wii U was a relative failure for Nintendo which (much like the Virtual Boy) gives it a collector mystique simply for that aspect alone.

If nothing else, that Gamepad is the one thing that gives the Wii U some personality over its contemporaries.

I agree that the Wii U's library itself won't be the main draw moving forward. I do expect that ancillary features like the MiiVerse will be, though. When the MiiVerse was active would post doodles and weird jokes there using their Wii U gamepads. It had a very wacky atmosphere and I would often see MiiVerse memes leak onto the my regular Internet haunts. A few years back I read that some fans "backed up" the MiiVerse, so you can still view what everyone posted before Nintendo pulled the plug. I'm not sure how anyone would go about restoring its functionality in the future, though.
Edit: Also it just occurred to me that Star Fox Zero is still a Wii U exclusive and will likely remain that way forever.
