Ever stop playing a game you like because it's just too hard? I enjoy a challenge, and I've beaten a number of games considered hard or very hard. Comix Zone is easy to me, I can do Double Dragon 3 NES without spamming cyclone kicks, etc. But I have my limits. Two examples come to mind:
I played Undeadline for a while, but I don't think I ever made it past... the second level? Or did I make it to the third? Shmups aren't a genre I'm particularly good or experienced at. This game is my type of shooter, but it's absurdly difficult. That's probably why I never hear anyone talking about it.
Another is Amagon (NES). Admittedly, it'd just be decent at best even if it were better balanced. But it's also kind of my style, gameplay-wise. Progress is just too damn slow to bother.
I've also never made it far in the original arcade version of Rastan, but I haven't given up on it - one day I'd like to give it time for real and make it through.

I beat Ghouls 'n Ghosts' first loop when I was a kid, just because I didn't own many games, but I don't know if I ever went back and got the real ending. I don't think I did.

Shinobi on PS2. I'm sure I could have pushed forward if I wanted, but I burned out.
Also, Contra: Shattered Soldier.

I remember Kurt Kalata from Hardcoregaming 101 saying that Shinobi PS2 was the only time he'd ever dropped a game at the final battle. It was so long and fickle and difficult that he just couldn't try again.
The main reason I never really played it beyond just trying it out is that (from what I remember) you have to restart from the beginning of the level when you die, and the levels are like 10 minutes long. In a famously difficult game, that's a huge flaw.

If I legitimately enjoy a game, but it's also kick you in the nether zone tough, I'll overcome the challenge regardless. But I've quit playing hard games when they had no other redeeming value than I'M A HARD GAME HURR DURR. But only one game comes to mind that I thought was legit good, but was also I'M A HARD GAME HURR DURR, and yet I quit playing it: Shattered patience more like it. Did give up on that one. Put it in the "maybe someday when I undervalue my existence enough to waste limited life hours memorizing all levels/enemy placements/boss patterns to develop the requisite muscle memory" pile. The same way I beat "really hard" oldschool games as a kid with loads of free time. That's how I beat many, many difficult 8/16-bit games as a kid. As an adult with limited free time that kind of challenge doesn't interest me much anymore. I'd rather overcome hard games that aren't so static in their challenge design.

Shinobi on PS2. I'm sure I could have pushed forward if I wanted, but I burned out. I was staying over at a friends in middle school playing this game. Got to the final boss and I want to say it took hours. I told my friend I wasn't going to bed or leaving until I beat it, lol. I finally did.
I'll have to think of something here, but I never really gave up as a kid. But just naturally couldn't beat some games. I'd keep renting them and stuff though like Battletoads, always get far in Blaster Master, never got past Norfair as a kid in Metroid, etc lol. I also don't think I beat Zelda 1 until emulation or many years later. Zelda 2 I didn't even beat until a few years ago with the Wii U release, that one was a long time coming.

I've never beaten Battletoads on NES legit. I've beaten it using save states, and frankly that was plenty good enough for me. I really have no plans to return to it other than as maybe a brief diversion.

Lots. I don't especially enjoy really difficult games, nor am I inclined to "practice" to get better at video games.
Add Ghouls 'n Ghosts to my list too. I get boned pretty early on. I have finished Ghosts 'n Goblins and mostly found it tedious.
Never finished Ikari Warriors, or any sequels, but those games are terrible so I don't especially care.
Arcade Rygar -- hard as hell.
Haven't finished Ninja Gaiden II or Castlevania III. I don't have Ninja Gaiden III.
Plenty of shmups that don't allow you to credit-feed. Hell, there are even some credit-feeders that I still can't muscle through, as they use checkpoints as opposed to respawns.
Some old ass WRPGs, especially those D&D games that expect you to know all the tabletop rules.
As far as Japanese RPGs go, Valkyrie no Bouken... shitty game and I felt like I got caught in some loop of constantly breaking equipment. Nope.

nullPointer: I hadn't beaten Battletoads legit myself until several years ago, where I decided to practice up for it. Used save states to learn the tricky bits, then made a legit run. I like the creativity on display, but it's way too unforgiving to be a consistently fun experience. Unlimited continues would have helped that. bonesnapdeez: Arcade Rygar is indeed brutal. I tried to beat it, but at some point you can no longer continue, so that was the end of that. I think Ninja Gaiden II would be the easiest if you were going to finish one. It's ironically my least favorite, despite being the most balanced in difficulty.
