Breakdown is a cool game, but man, it gets crazy tough at the end. I think I ended up using a lower-difficulty save to get past the place I was stuck, then resumed at normal difficult or something like that. Very frustrating.
Another game I gave up on, partly for difficulty and partly because it just lost its sheen was Jak 2. The GTA influence made things worse, and there's a horrible escort mission that's incredibly tough to clear. And I really don't much care for escort missions, especially when the AI is dumb, dumb, dumb.

The only good escort missions I can think of were in Wild Arms XF and Growlanser IV. The first because it's turn-based and customizable, so you can plan things out at your leisure; the second is semi-real time (as you know) and since customizing your gems let allows you to change your stats exponentially, it gives you a reason to maximize speed of movement and have your characters swiftly assassinate would-be ambushers. But in real-time games with guns where it takes two seconds to die they're usually a bad moment to go through.

Yeah, Growlanser is an exception. Those are very well done.

For all the hard games I beat listed in the other thread, here's a chance to make fun of Ex. Once upon a time many years ago, I rage quit... I was at the final boss, and I just couldn't beat the bastard. Ended up rage quitting and deleting my save. This was before I understood the "can't beat the boss but the next day it was easy" phenomenon. I'm sure plenty of people beat this game and some of them even on HRG. I intend to go back and get my revenge eventually.

The NES game is probably the best/easiest.
I always wondered how the original plays on the Mark III (no localized SMS release).

As for the NES game, I did beat that one legit when I was a kid. Killer game.
I don't think I've played the SMS version, that's a good question.

Rygar for PS2 is really good, though. I like both it and the NES version. And yeah, I have no doubt you'd smoke it today, Ex . PS2 version got ported to Wii, with an odd main character design change, and some smaller changes along the way. I haven't finished it, though. Also, I've pointed it out before, but the princess definitely looks a lot like Britney Spears.

For a second I thought they officially licensed Britney Spears' likeness. They should have worked in a "hit me baby one more time" into the dialogue.

As someone who's listened to a lot of Rammstein and a little Spears back in ye day, I must say that's a dead on parody.
