It's definitely from the Double Dragon school of beat-em-ups. If they could have tightened the gameplay a good deal, it would've been the only thing close to a 4-player DD, but I guess Konami needed a practice run for their 4-player beat-em-ups before they got it right.

I think in mentioning this I'm going to out myself as a weaksauce gamer, but Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja checks this mark for me. I LOVE Shinobi III, I love the horseback riding sequence, I love randomly surfing, I love running towards my enemies and slashing them, It's a fantastic game. What I don't love is that weird misty sequence where you have to jump forever and get turned around a bajillion times. I'll probably go back and beat it for real one day, but I got so outrageously frustrated with it that I've not wanted to plug it back in for a while.

lol, that and the falling rocks stage are a little tricky.
If it means anything, you're near the end of the game.

The only way I could wring any fun out of this was to play with another human being. But sometimes I just want to play against the computer. It sucks that's not really feasible. This is how I feel about most fighting games. Even the games where the computer isn't cheap, they're just not nearly as fun as with a human player. Unfortunately, I rarely have another person to play video games with these days. So I end up not playing any fighting games.

And, to make matters worse, even if you do get a human opponent, if the skill level gap is too wide, it still ends up not being much fun. There have been perfect storm moments in my life where a group of us all starts a fighter at the same time, and progress with it simultaneously, and when that happens, I absolutely love the genre. Its still one I keep up on, too, and have nothing but admiration for, but for how much I love them, I almost never find myself able to play them.

I've played a lot of single-player fighting games. I just enjoy seeing how badly I can beat up on the CPU... or seethe when I get destroyed by it. Seriously, some of those games will hand you your head. SNK fighters are the worst, but you also get stuff like Guilty Gear X2 where you need to have some pretty significant knowledge of some of the more advanced techniques to even survive against I-No. (If memory serves, it's a block mechanic where you can actually negate damage; I think one of I-No's supers is completely unblockable without it.)

I tend to enjoy playing against high level computer more than human, only for the challenge factor. IRL I have a hard time finding human players who can put up a decent fight against me (in various fighting games). I will say that Sarge bucked that trend when he and I played Street Fighter against one another. Dude puts up a mean Ken!
