Mortal Kombat II - Sega GenesisI really liked MK1 on the Genesis. MK2 has better graphics, music, sound, and basically everything. But the difficulty blows. It's like they forgot this isn't an arcade game designed to gobble up all your quarters, because it literally reads your button inputs and automatically just blocks everything. The only way I could wring any fun out of this was to play with another human being. But sometimes I just want to play against the computer. It sucks that's not really feasible. Contra Hard Corps - Sega GenesisI don't have words for how much I respect this game. The graphics make the Genesis bend over backwards with more special effects I ever imagined possible and the story is a kick to the teeth of pure ADHD insanity. But it's brutally hard. I actually kept it on my shelf for years before I considered seriously attempting it. By sheer determination I was able to progress a few stages, but I'd invariably reach an unfamiliar area and get my ass handed to me again. Unlike MKII I plan to actually beat this one day, though, so I haven't thrown in the towel yet. How about you guys? Which good games do you think are dragged down by their difficulty level?

I'm not sure I put them in the hate category, but until I scaled those mountains, I didn't like many of the hard games I've beaten. I actually used to not like the original Contra. Now, it's amazing.
One of the recent ones is Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts. Used to really not like the game; it just felt blatantly unfair and cheap. And maybe that's true, but once I beat it... I like it a lot! Battletoads also ended up in this category.
By the way, Hard Corps is brutal, but not like Contra III Hard mode. Oof. My advice is to abuse save states so you can learn the problem spots, then give it a go legit. That's how I've taken down a lot of the harder games since I don't have copious amounts of free time like I used to.

I'm pretty masochistic when it comes to gaming. I've definitely played games that seemed laughably hard on first approach, like Beatmania IIDX. That was never a turn-off for me, though, and only made me curious to see if the game was actually do-able. The hate tends to come in upon realization that the difficulty stems from bad game design, which is another thing altogether.
A lack of difficulty, however, can sour an otherwise great game for me. Not that I hate them, but games like MUSHA, Verytex, Thunder Force III, etc., have such wonderful presentation that I wish playing them was more engaging. Verytex especially, God-Tier OST in a game that will almost put you to sleep. Damn shame.

Right. My big hangup is if the game's difficulty derives from terrible controls or whatnot. Of course, that usually makes the game terrible regardless, so it's not just the difficulty doing it. I do tend to not like games with "gotcha" deaths, but then, a ton of games do this. The only reason I don't get more of them in NES games is that I've either played them too much, or have grown wise to the developer tricks. (I still hate how Mega Man games will throw in enemies that shoot out of pits when you try to jump across. Pure troll move!) Speaking of games that y'all might love to hate, give Holy Diver a go sometime. I finished that out of pure bull-headed stubbornness. Some consider it harder than Battletoads, even. And there are enough little control quirks that you will hate the game at times. This area, in particular, is brutal.

I generally seek out challenge in video games, I enjoy for games to put up a decent fight. But sometimes, yeah, too much can be too much. Two examples: A game I want to like, but is stupid hard because of terrible balancing: A game I want to like, but is stupid hard because of terrible controls (and terrible camera):

Those are two excellent examples, Ex. I want to like GunValkyrie as well, but those controls... I did reasonably well for a little while, but the game really starts to throw things at you that the controls just aren't up to the task for. Way harder than it should be. I'm sure there are some intensely technical players out there that love it, but I just gave up after a while.

I edited the topic title and changed "hate" to "disappointed". I don't hate MKII or Contra Hard Corps, in fact I really want to love them, the difficulty just makes it hard to. I guess that's not really the same as outright hatred. Ghosts N' Goblins seems to keep coming up in this topic. I low-key had that game on my radar cause it looks like 16-bit Capcom goodness, but was always hesitant to try it. The absurd difficulty looked hard to enjoy. Who honestly wants to beat a game twice in one sitting just to get the "true" ending? This was brought up elsewhere in the forum, but Battletech for the Sega Genesis is relevant. In 1997 my Mom rented it for me from Blockbuster. Superficially it looked great for the time - an isometric military "blow stuff up" game like Urban Strike, just with mechs instead of helicopters. But the difficulty was insurmountable. I think I completed stage 2 once, briefly glimpsed stage 3, then died. A few weeks ago I drove out to visit Chibby and his wife when he got out his copy of Battletech for us to play. It's just as brutal as I remember it. We gave up on stage 2.

Ghosts n Goblins comes to mind. It would be so much better with Mario style controls instead of the rigid second-gen style jumping.

Man, that's the worst part about GnG. So trolly, having to beat it twice. Once is hard enough, but the second loop, not to mention making sure you've got the right weapon... I really had to work at that last stage in SGnG to find all the chest drops to make sure I had the Goddess Bracelet. Although really, it's more useful to have the crossbow up to a certain point, then make the switch. (Freaking Red Arremers!)

Difficulty usually doesn't turn me off as long as I'm still having fun with the game. That said, fuck this game.
