Yep, haha. I guess expectations go a long way, though - we expect silliness in MGS. We've been conditioned to accept it.

If not, add it to the never ending list of games I thought you'd like and you don't. I don't think Lost Planet is awful, a 6/10 means I think it's slightly above average. But this game's got far too much stupid in its design to be anything great thus far. But I'll still stick with it for now. From what I've read it was the multiplayer that people really loved with this one back in '06. Its multiplayer buoyed its overall review score average as a result. Looks like the two sequels were reviewed more poorly, though. Regardless, knowing what you value in games, I can see why this one was a winner for you. Lost Planet is definitely challenging. At least on Normal difficulty. The game offers the standard Easy, Normal, and Hard. Though that goofy 3D Bionic Commando game was pretty solid. That particular game (which was developed by Grin, not Capcom) is a great 7th gen third person shooter. I enjoyed beating the 360 version. I think a lot of people knocked it because dealing with swinging on the grappling hook in a 3D space was too much for average Joe gamer. @those are the type of design choices I tend to hate as well I just wish I could do a freakin' roll dodge, even that would be a boon. No idea what you'll think of this one man. Maybe you'd love it, I dunno. Definitely not a priority over the likes of Vanquish or finishing The 3rd Birthday, though.

I'm pretty sure I dropped it after the first boss. Yeah it's tough. But strangely compelling in that "oh this game ain't gonna beat ME!" kind of way.

I actually think Lost Planet 2 having a -vastly- shorter (~3-4 hours) and uninteresting campaign is probably what hurt that one. Beat it in one sitting with a few friends on XBL though, that was kind of fun with some really crazy spectacle boss fights. But I was missing a beefier campaign like the first game had.
3 was developed by a Western studio and tries to be some kind of heavier story/Dead Space ripoff. I couldn't finish it.

It's 3D Contra, except your protagonist is running on sprained legs, can't keep his balance, forgot his coat, and the bosses all have never ending smoke grenades.

I should really load it up again. Yet everything you describe sounds pretty accurate to my memories. I'd like to believe it holds up for my tastes... but maybe I shouldn't bet on that.

It would be interesting to see how LP holds up for you. I mean, it didn't take that long to get to mission 3 and 4. It was 3 and 4's bosses that irked me last night. If I'd played this in 2006 as a teenager, well I can see how it would have been more impressive back then. Giant bosses are always cool as well. BTW I'm playing the 360 version, maybe the final PC version smooths some quirks out. Another thing that irritates me is that if you want to make adjustments to the gameplay (like say the deadzone of the aiming), you have to go all the way out to the main menu to do that. So you have to quit playing, go the main menu, change the setting, load your game again, get back into the action, and then see if it's the way you want. If not, you have to do that whole process of quitting to the main menu again. What game designer in their right mind wouldn't realize how tedious that is? So much derp like that in this one. But I've some fun with it here and there.

I knocked out the first mission of Lost Planet and the game still seems amazing to me. L3 + A is a roll that can effectively be used as a dodge... hope you haven't been playing this whole time without knowing that Ex. Now I need to remember how to reload guns without just using a full clip. I think there's some weird combo of inputs that does it. Funny how some of it already came back to me. It's a chunky feeling game but in a great way to me. Mecha feel amazing and these grenades are incredible.
PC version runs pretty good. Was surprised I could bump it up to 4K on my OLED. There's some screen tearing and lip sync issues with the voices in the cutscenes. But PC performance seems very hit or miss per user. I almost don't want to mess with the options haha.
toei: I'm guessing you got the normal release on Steam? Lost Planet - Extreme Condition? The Colonies version got delisted and has issues I guess. Hopefully you got the right one.
