I hate the ones where I imagine I've signed up for a college class, and forgotten to attend all semester. Or even worse, for some reason I'm back in my old school pre-college. Those are really weird, because my brain actively rebels against the notion. "Why am I even here? I've graduated college!" One weird dream I had was one where my parents had turned into some sort of cyborgs. I absolutely know this was inspired by the bit in Superman III where the lady gets pulled in by the supercomputer and turned into one, so... yeah. Oh yeah, the back-in-school dream. I had countless variations of this one, including one where the entire school was made of ice. Usually my problem in that dream is that I don't have my schedule and have no idea what my next class is supposed to be. It's never supposed to be the first day, either, so I always feel kind of bad about having wasted the school year so far, not bothering to learn what my classes are. Never dreamed about parents turning into cyborg, but I did dream that a witch had taken my mother's place, and she was really the villain from this kid's movie I'd recently seen (don't know what it's called, but it's about a boy who gets turned into a mouse by a witch, IIRC, and runs around either a hotel or some big commercial building).

Man, I had a weird one last night. I was trying to infiltrate some gang or secret society or something, which apparently had an initiation. We were all lined up in front of a table, and apparently there were explosives scattered about as well, but someone came in and shot machine gun fire as they moved across the room, and you just had to sit there and hope you didn't get hit. Then someone comes out and says to the guy next to me, "We find favor with you," and they take him to the back. Then he turns to me and says, "We do not find favor with you," and I look over and there's a guy across the room practicing with a sword, very much a sort of samurai/Asian guy. I'm all like, "I'm the new guy, how am I supposed to know what to do and find favor?" So I high-tail it out the front door, where I encounter a young kid with a shaved head, a sort of monk-ish little guy, and he says to follow him if I want to find favor. I do so, and I end up climbing this sort of ancient wooden bramble forest/thicket/vine thing... and that's when I ended up waking up. Strange stuff.

anayo Yeah, that's the one. I recognized the witch instantly. They used to play it on TV now and then, so I've seen it a few times. Fittingly, all the youtube comments are about how that movie traumatized them when they were kids.

Fittingly, all the youtube comments are about how that movie traumatized them when they were kids. I still want to see it. As a kid I wanted to but never got around to it. I was a big Roald Dahl fan in those days and read almost all of his books. Most of the film adaptations of his books are pretty good apparently? Fantastic Mr. Fox - Saw this in high school, really liked it (that probably has a lot to do with Wes Anderson's quirky style though) The BFG - Saw the late 80's or early 90's 2D cartoon one as a kid. Not sure what I would think now, but I liked it at that age. Matilda - This one was great. It's considered an iconic 90's kids' movie now. People my age are super nostalgic about it. I think I'm overdue for a rewatch. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - In kindergarten and 1st grade I looooved this (the one from the 70's with Gene Wilder in it, not the bad 2000's one by Tim Burton). It was so appealing and morbid and weird. I did rewatch it recently as a grown-up. It holds up.

I was playing this atypical hori shmup where you were playing as a humanoid character that could sometimes fly but would lose its wings if you took too much damage, turning the game into more of an action platformer. There was a weapon that would fire a green, toxic-looking cloud that remained suspended in the air for a few seconds; not only did it damage whatever enemy it touched, but if you hid behind it, you were completely protected. Of course, this overpowered weapon was a temporary bonus thing that you'd only have time to fire 3-4 times before you lost it. I was fighting this enormous fleshy boss, and I went up close to its stomach to use that weapon, since the cloud appeared right next to you, then ducked inside of it for protection. This revealed that the insides of the boss were hollow and computerized! I was pretty stoked at discovering this secret, since there was nothing to hint at it, and you were able to fight and damage the boss from the outside in the normal way. I started flying up its body towards the head. It was so big that the screen had to scroll up, and it was built in a way that you could have jumped your way up if you'd lost your wings. At the top was this pink, organic-looking thing partly encased in metal, acting as its brain. I started firing at it and it hit shot me back, causing me to lose my wings, but I was able to finish it off quickly with a couple somersault kicks, defeating the boss. That's when I woke up.

This sounds like something I totally want to play.

Definitely sounds pretty wild, yet absolutely plausible for a shmup, particularly something in the 16-bit era.

I dreamed I was digging through a box of someone's unwanted belongings. The owner of the box must have been an exchange student studying in East Asia because it was full of Korean and Japanese study books. I started making a pile of the Japanese study resources when I noticed a strange piece of software on CD-ROM. It was a Lego title that allowed you to interface with either a 3D printer or a plastic injection molding system to make your own Lego bricks. The most bizarre detail was that this software was for the original Sony Playstation. It had a picture of a Lego guy on the front of the box along with colorful samples of the things you could create.

anayo: That would have been mind-blowing tech for the time for sure.
