Interesting, yeah I played Gold. Guess I missed that area entirely...
Reminds me of how Midway put their office in Rush 2.

I enjoyed watching this very-70s promotional ad for the original Magnavox Odyssey. So I figured I'd share.

I love how the sales argument was basically "video games: for when it rains." Now you have gamers who almost never leave the house.

It's true, though. Even when I was growing up, if it was pretty outside, that's where I was expected to be in most cases.

And now a lot of older people who scolded us are addicted to phones and FB. Go figure.

And now a lot of older people who scolded us are addicted to phones and FB. Go figure. Yeah my dad used to give me a hard time about how long I would spend on my computer as a teenager. (That was an offline computer no less.) Nowadays my dad spends loads of time on his laptop doing internet stuff. The irony isn't lost on me. When I was a kid my parents never attempted to limit my video game time. They didn't care, I was left on my own to do whatever I wanted most of the time. However I still spent a lot of time outside playing without being forced to. Even as a young kid, video games were only entertaining for an hour at a time or so. Then I'd be out riding my bike, building forts in the woods, swimming, climbing trees, whatever. I guess it helped that the video games I was playing as a kid, were not designed to be Skinner boxes that promoted Gacha addiction either.

Yeah, I won't say I had it too bad overall. Videogames were just kind of a beating stick most of my family and adults in general "didn't understand". They would complain about how much I played, but I'm not sure if I ever had any literal time restrictions. It was often one of the first things to get banned when I'd get grounded, but that was pretty rare. I too got outside on my own accord all the time as a kid, was huge on trick bikes and hitting up the parks. I was never into sports, but always loved exploring creeks, the woods, houses under construction lol, etc. I think an excuse I have as an adult that no longer does any of that, is that I wish I had a buddy/chick again to go hiking with and such. Such things might be more fun with others.
The most extreme scenario I had is a story I think most regulars here know by now, how my aunt and uncle bought me a Gameboy Pocket for one Christmas that my dad took and hid REALLY GOOD, to the point that I never found it. And I basically wasn't allowed to own a handled my entire childhood, because then "I'd never stop playing games". Thankfully my dad was the type that when I turned 18 it was free reigns for whatever. Prior to that, he did always say if I could save up my money for X, I could get it. Which I did for my Xbox and Halo. He didn't like that Halo was M, but he approved of it since it was my hard earned lawn mowing savings.
Half a lifetime later it's why I still and never will really love handhelds like a lot of people do. But I've since then dabbled from the DS and on. And I've certainly played a few dozen great handheld exclusives along the way. It really does feel like I only tend to play like ~2 handheld games a year though. It was easy to emulate the GB/GBA era along the way growing up, but yeah. From the DS and on it's mostly been real hardware, but it's a rare event for sure.

Rated M for Mowing And eh, I had handhelds, they just kinda suck for the most part. Unless you're stuck on a bus or waiting for appointments on a regular basis, I don't see the point. When you're outside you should be doing outside things. It's extremely ironic that I'm typing this - I have the reverse arc as Ex's dad, in that I used to hate nature and would have had rather stayed home to play video games or at most hang out on a friend's couch than actually went somewhere on my vacations. Lately, I feel the opposite, though. I have a strong urge to do actual, physical things in the real world. I even regret not playing any sports when I was a kid. I wonder how my life might have turned out differently had I done so.

Videogames will always be #1 for me but kind of related, I've felt for years now that if I had WAY more money and a house, I'd probably rather have a gym than a fancy gaming space. That's a dream for me... I'd love to have a few machines, weights, etc in a basement or whatever, always ready to go and in the comfort of my own space.

My dream house also has a gym. With a punching bag, too. Back when I lived with roommates we kept a punching bag in the driveway behind the apartment (since it's way too noisy to use inside if you have neighbors living above or below you), but whenever we'd try use it the neighborhood dogs would start barking like mad. It's a really good way to let off steam, but it's not practical at all. I'd still have a nice, quiet room for watching movies, tv or playing games.
