my family and adults in general "didn't understand" My mother used to play Atari 2600 games with me. We had some epic Joust tournaments. She also co-op'd Quartet with me on SMS. So yeah she was at least positive about video games. My dad however, thought video games were a complete waste of time. He wouldn't stop me from playing video games, but he would actively mock my video games and my playing of them. The only video games I know my dad enjoyed was Defender in the arcade, and DOOM on PC for about 10 minutes. Although one time he walked in while I was fighting Mother Brain in Super Metroid, and he was super impressed with the graphics. But in general my dad was anti-video games and considered them a waste of time. I love hiking now, but I wasn't much into it until I started dating my wife back in 2010. She loves walking in nature, so I indulged her, and yeah we've hiked thousands of miles together by now. So I say yes, having someone else to hike with is much funner than hiking by yourself. [ I still and never will really love handhelds like a lot of people do. I had handhelds, they just kinda suck for the most part. Heathens! The majority of handheld games I've played have been at home, sitting in a recliner. Though I've also played them while in hotels while out on road trips for jobs. Handheld games have some advantages over console games. But I don't think expounding on those positives is going to change your or Xeogred's minds. This is part of why I got into analog board/card games so heavily in the past few years. I wanted to interact with tactile tangible things, that didn't need electricity or pixels to be enjoyed.

True, they could be good if you're traveling for business in a place that's not particularly interesting to visit. Believe or not, though, I have never actually stayed in an hotel. Never worn a tie, either. Am I even an adult?

Neither of my parents are gamers. I think my Dad has picked up a controller maybe once or twice. I remember him trying Xevious and not being too impressed... but we weren't very impressed by it either, so ha! It was a Christmas present, though, so it was kept around for far longer than other games because of that.
I don't travel a ton, but I've definitely spent some time in hotels. The longest was a two week training session in Florida, learning how to operate a Puma drone (one of the small types the military uses for recon).
I used to hate wearing ties, but now they don't bother me. In general, I normally wear a full suit jacket to church. Yes, I'm that guy. If your stuff fits well, it's surprisingly comfortable. I mean, no, not t-shirt and shorts comfortable, but comfortable enough.

It was kind of funny how at one point this year when I was over visiting family, my mom noted that my dad tries playing videogames more with my nephew since he regrets not playing them much with me growing up. He was always playing the guitar though when I was growing up... it's really no different, hobby wise. Everyone has their thing.
I know we've talked about these stories before, but there were a few games I did play with my dad and some of his friends off and on, especially during the SNES era. My dad read all of ActRaiser while I beat it over a weekend, before I could even read myself. What other kid is that badass? lol, then he was pretty into Super Ghouls n' Ghosts too. These two games are peculiar, because I grew up when he was a bit of a religious zealot. Maybe he thought ActRaiser was a Christian game. But Super Ghouls is pretty evil and grim for a 16ibt game.
Lemmings, The Lost Vikings, Earthworm Jim, Another World / Flashback, are a few others that come to mind. Doesn't seem like my dad cared for normal platformers, most of the stuff he liked was usually pretty unique or had some kind of gimmick.
When the PS2 came out, one of his best friends came over with one and we played it all day. It was mostly sports games... but it blew us all away. My dad liked SSX so much, he got a PS2 "for the family", so it had to stay in the living room. This is about the deepest it ever went with him and 3D though. He can't handle it for the most part, apparently.

When I was 9 years old, I spent an entire saturday trying to beat Alex Kidd in Miracle World. At one point my dad and my uncle were watching me play. I finally reached the last castle and the final boss. At that point I got really excited, and my dad then told me to go outside and get something for him. So I paused the game. When I came back inside, the game was at the title screen. I got extremely angry and asked what happened. My dad just laughed and my uncle tried to play it off like my dad had "accidentally" reset the console. I knew full well my dad did it on purpose. He had a really sadistic sense of humor when I was younger.

Interesting takes on Quake II here from Civvie. Always dig when he throws in a lot of the developer history too for this title.

Interesting takes on Quake II here from Civvie. Quake II is a great game in my book, but I always thought it was inferior to the original Quake - and very different, too. Trent Reznor saying Quake II had 'no atmosphere' was brutal, but I see what he meant. You can tell Quake II is the first game made by id under the 'Carmack' rule. Losing Romero and with no one able to stand up to Carmack, id became way too focused on the technical side of things at the expense of the game design/story/atmosphere. Makes sense their next game was an arena shooter like Quake III. Luckily, other studios made memorable games using that engine. I mean, when I think of the 'Quake III engine' I don't even think of Quake III, but rather of games like Jedi Outcast.
