My friend's son said he would be down with trying some Gamecube games with me, particularly Super Mario Sunshine and Resident Evil 4. In his words, "those are closer to this era". I think he's onto something, since I tried playing 16-bit games with a friend of mine who's about 5 years younger than me, and he was really tepid about it, but when we got out Timesplitters 3 and Star Wars Rogue Leader he lit up like a kid on Christmas.

So the requisite is the games need to be 3D?

That does appear to be the case, although I also suspect that older PSX or N64 games might not appeal, either. I feel like the PS2/Gamecube era is where 3D games really started to see significant polish. They hold a lot in common with games now, so as long as you can get past the graphics (which still aren't all that bad), you're in for a good time.

Sarge and ExI have noticed a general lack of enthusiasm for 2D games among younger people who grew up after 3D games became prevalent. The cutoff age seems to be mid to early 20's. I can talk about 2D gaming with people who grew up in the 8 and 16 bit eras and get an enthusiastic response. But as soon as you bring it up with people who grew up with Playstation/N64 or later they don't seem to like it. Even my friend I keep mentioning, who grew up in the 80's, doesn't like 2D games at all, and his 8-year old son calls them, "Those old, hard games." I would chalk this difference in tastes up to my personal nostalgia, except I love 8-bit arcades like Asteroids, Dig-Dug, and Burgertime, and one of my prized possessions is a Vectrex. All of those things were hot almost a decade before I was born and I wasn't really aware of them until my teens. My friend's 8-year old son isn't completely in the dark about gaming history because he watches a lot of youtube. It kind of flabbergasted me that he knew Nintendo and Mario pulled the US out of the video game market crash. He's expressed an interest toward Gamecube games before. I agree with Sarge, since that generation is probably closer to what he's used to. Anyway, I haven't really met anyone in my area IRL who's into retro gaming like I am, so I'm more than willing to meet halfway with someone.

I wonder if it's like the whole black & white / color movies thing. Some people refuse to watch black & white films. It's kind of the same thing with 2D and 3D games. Kind of.
At any rate, I don't know anyone outside the internet forums I frequent that play retro games. The few gamers I know in real life are all about current modern gaming, period. It's sad and dumb.

I wonder if it's like the whole black & white / color movies thing. Some people refuse to watch black & white films. It's kind of the same thing with 2D and 3D games. Kind of. Americans don't like Chile powder on their candy. They don't like dissonance in their music. They don't like puns in other languages (because English is The Language.) And they don't like it when their video games don't look like Hollywood films. I keep humoring posting something where people in the area can see it to determine if there's anyone nearby with similar interests. Maybe like at an arcade. I mean, people get together to play Magic the Gathering at the comic book store, isn't there something similar for old games? But my introversion gets the better of me.

My friend's 8 year old son today: "Did you bring Mario Sunshine?"
Me: "Yes."
Him: "OK, let's play it."
*10 minutes later*
Him: *trying to shoot a piranha plant in first person mode but taking damage from slimes on the ground* "This is hard. I want to play Fortnite."
Me: ".... Ok."

Higher peaks offer greater views but take more effort to reach.
A whole generation of kids will never understand that.

My nephew only plays Fortnite and Minecraft. I don't bring up my own hobbies to people in real life, but he did ask to play some of my games after he saw me playing something. I let him go into my game collection room and pick something out to play. He chose a Namco Museum volume for PS1 and spent a decent amount of time playing it and seemed to enjoy it, but I admit I was slightly baffled by that pick out of 700 games haha.
