chibbyI beat MGS back in 1999. I was a little late to the party, but I did watch some friends play the game when it debuted in 1998. But no, I didn't mess with the logs. The main dish was enough for me. I'm glad you beat the game, and experience a true gaming classic. I'm very biased towards a high opinion concerning MGS, because I lived through its monumental impact, and remember how amazing so many of its elements were for its time. I really don't know what I'd think of the game if I were ten years younger, and playing it for the first time now. I have to think it'd be a least decent, and you seemed to think so as well. If nothing else man, you've got to love the Psycho Mantis bit. In the PS1 version if you had a dualshock, he'd make the controller move across the floor. I showed that to my dad and he was legit freaked out by it (he didn't know the controller had rumble built in). I kinda wish you'd just go ahead and play MGS2 now, just to see how you'd react to it. MGS2 is Kojima riding high on MGS1's success, thinking he can do no wrong (and no one would tell him otherwise) and falling completely up his own ass. Don't get me wrong, MGS2 hits some high notes, but its low notes are LOW. But that's just my opinion, lots of folks love MGS2, some think it's the best in the series. I'd give it a 6/10 personally. But I'd give MGS1 a 9/10. As far as series' mainline entry times go; MGS2 averages 13 hours, MGS3 averages 16 hours, MGS4 averages 18 hours, and MGS5 averages 45 hours. Those are the main campaign blue times from HLTB.

Heh, yeah 6.5 for mechanics seems relatively harsh to me... like I dare you to go and play Syphon Filter now. You know, I think you're probably right. I literally beat the game and posted immediately after, which I think meant I skewed more towards those last few moments (fist fight/car chase) which I found, pretty damn frustrating. The gameplay mechanics as a whole weren't actually so bad. Reading you and Ex 's comments, and also after reflecting on the experience for more than the time it took me to type my initial response, I do think I should score the game higher. Or rather, I think the Metal Gear Solid is one of those perfect storms that is more than the sum of it's parts. So maybe the sum of it's parts is about a 7-7.5, but my enjoyment of the experience was closer to (but not quite) a 9. I had a damn good time. Except when I was punching. Which, all things considered, was exceedingly rare. EDIT: I see that you guys have asked me to go ahead and play MGS2. Ironically, my "easy" challenge ( Viewtiful Joe) took me the whole month of June to beat, my "normal" ( Mario 64) took me a few weeks, and MGS (my supposed "hard" which again, I know I took the easy way out and played the game on normal) only took me a long weekend to finish. I'm going to put at least one game in MGS and MGS2 but in the spirit of the summer challenge, I'll try to get to MGS2 before the month is over.

That's how Brain Lord was for me, I came here to get out all my frustration after beating it. But after a week or so and some reflecting I ended up being happy that I got through it. Man, I just LOVE the punching in MGS1 so that's why I defend it a bit haha. You can't punch anyone to death in the rest of the series. I think it's hilarious you can do that in MGS1 and often did just that, run around a corner and punch a dude until he dies and disappears turning into an ammo box, pretty funny. I'm also a sucker for the fixed camera angles in MGS1-MGS2 and then the awesome Metal Gear 1-2 styled radar. But I can get how that's maybe not for everyone, if you weren't playing a lot from that era. Resident Evil doesn't even allow you to go into first person or do anything at all! Have you played those? I think all the controls and first person view is improved in MGS2. MGS3 ditches the classic radar, has more camera control (Subsistence) for better or worse, but I just found it to be frustrating and didn't like the jungle setting much. The cool down Caution/Alert time after getting caught in this one is ludicrous. All topped off with some weird faux survival elements like food or status elements, etc. I love MGS3 like most but I definitely don't find it to be nearly as fun to play as the first two. And MGS2 has some weak bosses but you can't defend MGS3's bee guy or fire man, then that spider guy thingy... Since Ex knocked on MGS2 I thought I'd throw some pepper on MGS3.

I honestly think MGS3 has the best bosses of the entire series.

I'm mainly thinking of the Cobra Unit. The Boss The Sorrow The Fury The End The Fear The Pain The Boss is the only one that is an actual character. I had to look this up to remember the names for The Fury, Fear, and Pain. The Boss, Volgin, and Ocelot are top notch. Foxhound...
Liquid Snake Gray Fox Decoy Octopus (lol)
Psycho Mantis Revolver Ocelot Sniper Wolf Vulcan Raven
... no comparison.
MGS2 is up in the air against MGS3 for me but I think MGS1's roster steam rolls the rest. By MGS4, the boss group is literally like lifeless ghost bodies that may or may not take the form of previous fights in ways, but it doesn't totally matter since the enormous cast of characters by this point makes up for the lack of a cool evil unit.

Resident Evil doesn't even allow you to go into first person or do anything at all! Have you played those? No, and you have stumbled on the exact reason why. The only RE game I've ever played is RE4 (and even then it took some getting used to). I get frustrated really easily by a lack of camera controls. I also REALLY hate games with what I'd like to call Tank Controls (if I push left and the character starts to rotate instead of actually moving to the left, I am an unhappy camper). I think that was more or less why I'd put MGS in the "hard" category for me, though it actually controls much smoother than games like the early RE series or (I think) Silent Hill games. I booted up the first Tomb Raider on steam and I could barely stand it. I will 100% accept that this is a flaw on my part, but it's a flaw. Sometimes I beat myself up over it, but then I remember that probably 80% of the gaming world won't play games that don't use an HDMI cable these days, so I don't feel too bad.

chibbyWay to go for beating MGS! You've been beating a lot of really iconic late 90's games lately. I mostly missed out on Playstation because I loved Nintendo too much. Thankfully they remastered MGS1 on the Gamecube as "Metal Gear Solid: the Twin Snakes". I was about 14 or 15 when my younger brother got that game and we both played through it. That's probably the perfect age to play it. The tonal shifts don't matter, the badass moments seem SUUUUPER badass, the playful gimmicks like Psycho Mantis "reading" your memory card are just the coolest, the nuclear anti-proliferation message seems profound and deep. When the Playstation 3 was announced and they began showing trailers for Metal Gear Solid 4, teenage me wanted to play it so badly. But the trailers for it confused the heck out of me, since there's soooo many details to keep up with in each MGS game, and I had never played MGS2 or MGS3. So I always promised myself I'd play all of them to get caught up. A few years ago, I tried getting into a handheld port they made of MGS3, but I just couldn't get into it. My tastes have just changed too much. But if it's the late 90's and you're a teenager (or a teenager at heart), MGS is incredible.

Careful anayo , don't fall too far down the path of being a normal grown up drone adult human that loses passions and interests!

Careful anayo , don't fall too far down the path of being a normal grown up drone adult human that loses passions and interests! I think the issue is he played the portable version, none of the portable versions of MGS3 are ideal.

Atlantia: Legend of Blue Star Briganty: The Roots of Darkness Edge Flame Zapper Kotsujin Galt-Rio
Hercequary Last Breakers Metal Force
Net Guardian Night Slave Rusty Steam-Heart's Sword Dancer Usagina Panic Usagina Panic 2 Two down! Of course posted full reviews in the thread, but the short of it: Net Guardian is charming and simple, but still pretty fun! Something adorable about this one-man project in a shmup making tool. Hercequary has voiced lewd scenes!... and thats about its best offering, its gameplay is really bad.
