I liked MGS2, at least when I played it upon release. Having already enjoyed the 1st game, and expecting more of that, I think the subverting of expectations just really struck a chord with me. The opening half hour of MGS2 feels entirely like a true sequel, but by the end of the game I felt more like I was the subject of some weird psychological tests or something. I do fully think its a silly, weird, and oftentimes stupid game, but for some reason none of that bothered me. My jaw was often on the floor, questioning out loud whether the game was serious or not, but I had fun! Kojima lacking originality is something that never really bothered me. Yeah, Snatcher is just Blade Runner, but its good! And, taking ideas outside of the gaming realm and making them work within it is still impressive, and to me, is more original than, say, making your hit Castlevania game for the PS1 in the Super Metroid engine. Not that I think anyone here is dis-crediting works based on this, but it is brought up pretty often specifically in regards to Kojima's works, which always seemed odd to me. Gaming is full of rip-offs and inspirations, many of which end up birthing some really great stuff.

Ex 's mention of the naked cartwheeling reminded me that I'd forgotten an important note on my list of highlights. Technically this is from Twin Snakes, but it's roughly the same in Sons of LibertyWe've talked about other games with gratuitous butts before, but I'd like to point out that more than his snake is solid

I feel like that booty is a bit too polished for HRG. There we go.

I remember playing MGS 2 some 15 years ago and having fun with it even if I was not familiar with the first game. I actually borrowed it from a schoolmate in exchange for Devil May Cry 2 and I believe I barely made it past the vampire and I was about to disable some bombs before he started to ask for his game back. I believe he wasn't that happy with DMC 2. Gee, I wonder why.

Apparently his butt is looking different in the upcoming Smash Bros Ultimate and people are mad. Real news! True FactsI don't care either way, but that "nerf" comment is hilarious. Also, I enjoyed Snatcher several times more than Slow... sorry, Blade Runner, so whatever. Also, what's the best way to play MGS2 nowadays? Doesn't it have pressure-sensitive controls that aren't emulated properly, or is that another MGS?

Who doesn't ripoff anyone though? Kojima lacking originality is something that never really bothered me. Ripoffs and lacking originality are fine, except when you have legions of ignorant gamers attributing these unimaginatively ripped off ideas to the "genius" of a game designer undeservedly so. Kojima is not a genius writer. He's an amateur hour writer at best (though thankfully with a good sense of humor). Kojima is a great game designer, and a skilled cinematic director. But the only thing he's actually a genius at, is stealing other people's ideas, then putting those ideas into a medium having a demographic lacking exposure to the original conceptual conduits. That's a sneaky way to clothe a naked emperor.

I like Kojima's stuff, but yeah, I'd never say any of his stuff was necessarily original. However, I think there is absolutely a talent to putting those ideas into another medium and making it work. I've never cared much for some of his heavy-handed moralizing, but the fact that it's part of such a ridiculous series in the case of MGS makes it a bit more palatable. Hard to take anything seriously there. (By the way, Ex, you'll discover more about Vamp in MGS4 when you get to it.)
