anayo = Nightmare Circus-He already tested and stopped playing this, so I'm not sure what Anayo's playing this month. I beat Dune: Battle for Arrakis for July, so I'm playing Ghouls and Ghosts for August.

Ghouls 'n Ghosts is really good stuff. I'm not sure how hard it will be for you, I beat it when I was eleven IIRC, so probably not very. But GnG is super solid in presentation and design, I prefer it over the SNES version even. It will be fun to read your review after you finished it.

Yeah, playing through both of them, you can tell the design sensibilities changed quite a bit. GnG is every bit an arcade game ported home, whereas SGnG goes an almost more puzzle-ish direction in learning how to navigate the environments, particularly with that added double jump. (Also, there is a patch for SGnG that kills most of the slowdown. I need to try it one of these days.)

So far it seems like a quality title. It's hard, but it's not bullshit. I like the presentation and the overall scenario. Right now, though, it feels suspiciously unlike a leisure activity and more like work. My only misgiving is whether that feeling will persist through entire play through, or if I'll turn the corner and fall in love with it. That's not an unlikely outcome, since I kept beating my head against the wall with Darius II mainly because it pissed me off badly. But when I finally beat it, it felt great.

I'd almost forgotten about the Summer Challenge. Once I get Langrisser out of the way, I'll probably get started on Shinobi.

After spending a little time with Contra Shattered Solider last weekend and more today, I've managed to beat the first level! It's awesome, though like with most 2.5D games I often have trouble figuring out hit boxes and wondering what hurts you and what doesn't, like from explosions or debris, etc, it's hard to tell sometimes. This is probably the LOUDEST game I've ever played, the composer is Akira Yamaoka of Silent Hill fame going full on thrash metal... it's a little hard to hear the music underneath all the bullets and chaos, everything is turned up to an 11. I wouldn't have it any other way! ... except when a random horrible headache kicks in. So after getting destroyed in the second level (vehicle stage, those always mess me up since you lose some player control!), I couldn't play much more of this today with a headache haha. Seems great for sure though, but the story/cutscenes are hilarious. They don't overstay their welcome or anything but it's amusing they even tried to implement some story here.

Speaking of Silent Hill, that creature is both really impressive and terrifying. Something about the low-fi PS2 aesthetics (it kind of looks like a Simple 2000 game tbh) makes it even worse / better.

I agree, that thing is creepier than it would be if it were made today. In other news, per y'all's request I have started playing MGS2. I am at the point where you ( SPOILERS? Is this a spoiler at this point? I think it's on the box) play as Raiden. I understand that a lot of people were frustrated with that change, but I am all for it. Why you ask? I think the PS2 has done Snake a disservice. In the original game, the minimal polygonal Snake looked stoic and austere. On the Ps2, he looks like he's pooping 100% of the time. For reference: Stoic. Pooping. All Business. Doing his Business. Smoking a fat one. Dropping a fat one. <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="5.800000000000011" style="position: absolute; width: 10.600000000000023px; height: 5.800000000000011px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 5px; top: 293px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_21973156" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="5.800000000000011" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 5.8px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 293px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_80785532" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="5.800000000000011" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 5.8px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 527px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_39987275" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="5.800000000000011" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 5.8px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 527px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_33101555" scrolling="no"></iframe> Tell me I'm not the only one seeing this...
