I'm going to revive this thread, in honor of the PS2 hitting twenty years old. Congratulations, now you feel old as well.

Congratulations, now you feel old as well. What makes me feel old lately, is I've been watching ALF, and I now identify with Willy instead of Brian. The PS2 is still the GOAT 3D console tho.

Yep, I agree. There's so much stuff on there, and incredibly varied. USGamer made the case for it potentially being the best console of all time... and I can actually see the argument for it. (I'd roll SNES or NES, personally, but it'd be a hard call.)

I'm okay with calling the PS2 the greatest console of all time.

I don't think I'll ever retire the PSX (and yeah I'll be that guy throwing on the X there all the time haha), but I am getting closer and closer to finishing off the top priority stuff and essentials I've wanted to play throughout the years. Valkryie Profile feels like the last big one off the top of my head and I hope to play it this year. I think the day this all finally happens, I'll start focusing more and more on the PS2 in its place. And then I'll be stuck trying to "complete" some sort of personal journey with the PS2, because it has a billion games.

Yeah, the PS2 is deep, man. Lots of quality stuff, and the console where I'd argue that games were polished enough that even the lesser titles had a modicum of quality.

It's funny how my HLTB records confirm my thoughts above: PlayStation 1 - 33 - 9.71% PlayStation 2 - 8 - 2.35% PlayStation 3 - 29 - 8.53% PlayStation 4 - 33 - 9.71% This is of course just my own trends from 2016 and up though. And some of those PSX/PS2 games are old RPG saves I was able to dig up here and there. Realistically though the PS2 is still my biggest library of physical games for one platform though I'm pretty sure and I played dozens and dozens of games during its time. But yeah I still feel like the PS2 is an endless well I haven't really begun to dive through haha.
Hit up a lot of PS3 remasters too that are still technically PS2 games, like the awesome Ratchet & Clank series. Heck, Going Commando still might be my top favorite from that series.

I originally didn't dive into Ratchet & Clank, but my brother was a fan. Then I gave it a try, and dang if I didn't have a blast. Going Commando is indeed probably the best on the system. They're all legit, though.
Don't sleep on the Sly games, either.

Yup, I've played those. I didn't finish Sly 3 though... wasn't a huge fan of that one. Too many forced playable characters and a lot of annoying minigames, with weirdly really hard boss battles. Got a little too ambitious, I still want to check out the PS3 one though.
Sly 1 felt a lot like an N64 platformer to me, in a good way.
Jak & Daxter is the series I didn't care for much. The first game is alright, kind of Banjo Kazooie-ish. Couldn't stand 2 so I didn't even bother with 3.

I agree. I've always heard the first Jak is a good N64-style romp, but I've bounced off of it every time I tried it. The sequel was okay, but there was an infuriating escort mission that I eventually cheated my way past. In retrospect, I stuck with it because I wanted to like it, as opposed to it being actually that good. The little bit of Jak 3 I've played seems a bit better, though.
Regarding Sly 3, I agree with that, too. Sly 2 was my favorite, but Sly 3 muddied the water a little too much for me to love it as much. The original is more a traditional platformer, not much in the way of frills, but it plays wonderfully. I'll recommend it all day long.
While I'm thinking about 3D platformers, anyone got any under-the-radar recs they'd make for the system? It feels like this was the last system that really tried to push them hard.
