For this thread, I'm still a little curious about these: NES Bionic Commando NES Legendary Wings NES Disney's Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers NES Disney's The Little Mermaid NES Disney's TaleSpin NES Disney's DuckTales 2 NES Disney's Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 2 I've beaten some of those, so I'll speak towards the ones I have. Bionic Commando is absolutely amazing and my all time favorite NES game. BC does require learning a new form of player locomotion, which unfortunately many players lack the patience to acclimate to. The original Rescue Rangers was a lot of fun when I was a kid, mostly due to the simultaneous two player mode, but I've only ever beaten it single player. I beat The Little Mermaid for the first time in 2017, and only because I like aquatic themes... overall it's a 6/10 at most. I beat TaleSpin in 2017 as well, it's a fairly bare-bones shmup, outside its clever screen scrolling gimmicks there's nothing else interesting about it. I have not beaten Legendary Wings, DuckTales 2, or Rescue Rangers 2, so I can't speak to them yet. The first two are on my list to play for this theme though. RR2 I've played before, it seemed weak compared to the first RR. If you've never played Darkwing Duck, I'd wager you'd like it. It's basically a reskinned Mega Man.

To no surprise I'm sure, I've got that one covered already. Since it seemed like the closest thing to Mega Man. The ledge hanging bugged me a bit with how finicky it seemed sometimes, but yeah. Overall it was definitely solid fun.
Are we cool with cancelled games? Because I dug into Titan Warriors and it looks pretty dang cool. The music is explosively Mega Man-esque too, digging into that I guess Harumi Fujita composed for it, whom did Gargoyle's Quest, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, some of Mega Man 3, etc to name a few. I hear classic Capcom and I smile.

Of those, Bionic Commando would definitely get my highest recommendation. I've beaten all but Legendary Wings of that set. Ex's take on both Little Mermaid and TaleSpin is right on. The first Rescue Rangers is better than the second, and DT2 is better than the original, at least in my book.

I haven't mentioned one of Capcom's games I've been playing, but it will probably interest some of y'all when I reveal said title. It's a longer 8-bit game, though, which narrows down the possibilities quite a bit.

Well you've already beaten Willow, you're not much of a board game guy - so I doubt it's Wily and Light no Rock Board: That's Paradise, and I doubt you would be into Destiny of an Emperor. So I'm going with Sweet Home for now. - Edit: I did get some DuckTales 2 in this evening. Finished the Niagara and Bermuda stages. I like this game quite a bit so far. I don't know about this spit spat though...

You got it in one. However, DoaE is awesome. I beat it several times back in the day. I may also try to tackle the sequel this month.

DoaE is awesome. I beat it several times back in the day. I didn't expect that. Probably because I've never seen anyone discuss Destiny of an Emperor on any retro forum. Despite the fact DoaE got an official release and everything. Bit of an underdog, I've never even played it myself! However, I did beat Sweet Home a few years ago. If you want to know my thoughts.

I actually remember seeing a lot of talk about Destiny of an Emperor when I started hanging out on retro forums. It was regularly cited as one of the classics. I didn't end up liking it, though. I thought the battles were way too long to be random encounters.

I thought the battles were way too long to be random encounters. I was wondering about that myself, after I began reading up on this game (I really knew nothing about it until now). Looks like there's a form of mitigation concerning your issue: "In addition to standard attack and tactics options available in most games of the type, there is an option called "All-Out". When chosen, the computer AI takes control of the battle, which proceeds at an extremely fast rate. This is solely a way of speeding up the easier battles and has no tactical advantage, as the player is unable to coordinate attacks or employ tactics, while the AI-controlled enemy can." (Wikipedia) Even so, HLTB shows an average of 20 hours to complete this SJRPG. Due to that length, it's not a game I'd beat more than once. But I may check DoaE out eventually. Strange how I personally have never seen anyone discuss this game on a retro forum until now. I definitely missed the boat on this game.

The "All-Out" option works pretty well once you get more powerful. The early going definitely takes quite a bit to get to where you can comfortably employ that option. One of the things that drives how hard you hit is your soldiers (or HP) - beyond certain thresholds, your attack power increases significantly. This factors both into your own offense, and in taking down the larger boss-level skirmishes. Whittling down a very powerful attacker is a key strategy for surviving some of the crazier battles, and particularly the final one.
Another fun aspect of the game is that you can recruit other generals to your cause. You'll be wanting to swap them out relatively often, as you'll encounter stronger generals as you go through the game. Of course, your core team carries you through most of the game, but having powerful supplemental generals definitely helps your cause.
