Going back to some tough matches a time or day later with a fresh mindset is helping me persevere. I have to admit, after seeing you beat loads of tough Mega Man stuff and all the Souls games, I find it surprising that Punch-Out!! is challenging for you.* But to keep things in perspective, I started playing Punch-Out!! back in the '80s and through the '90s via renting it a few times, and borrowing it from friends. Then in the '00s and onward using emulation. So in a sense, I've got over three decades of experience with playing this game off and on. I'm sure that helps. Anyway, I'm glad to read that you are continuing and not giving up. Beating NES Punch-Out!! fair and square, is a rite of passage for any true 8-bit warrior. Just like beating Ninja Gaiden or Contra... or Mega Man!
*Before the Tyson fight, I mean. The Tyson fight is challenging even for veterans. - Yes... I'm gonna do another boxing game methinks.

Punch-Out is all patterns. It's basically a nonstop boss rush. So it's a lot to learn. I personally find that I can only figure out so many complex boss patterns in a day, so I understand Xeogred's struggle.

I'm surprised myself, but I think it's kind of like what toei and Sarge are getting at. I'm telling myself... this was the early 90's, kids would rent this (like Ex) and probably spend days playing it straight. Or some kids out there maybe owned it so they played it constantly, just like my small rotation of NES games back then. Going into Punch Out blind in 2021 though, yeah it seems pretty hardcore haha. So like some of you guys here and others that might speak of casually, that's from years of playing it and a lot of nostalgia. There's been many NES games during the HRG Club themes that I could get through in a quick 30-60 minute sitting, even without save states. I was in for a rude awakening thinking Punch Out would be a breeze too, lol. Not to mention I feel like over the years nowadays I just see people talking about quick runs of it too, so that's not very representative of a fresh run. I bet I've sunk a few hours into it. I'm using save states, but only at the beginning of a new opponent. I've probably crossed that stubborn barrier of mine at this point, I'm this far into it so I have to beat it now. But yeah this far in now I'm like, maybe I don't want to play Super Punch Out next.

I think you'd find SPO similarly frustrating, although for different reasons. The advantage there is that, while it requires lightning-fast reflexes, it's not quite as fast as the Tyson fight. But taking that game down still feels just as satisfying. It's one that I'm very glad Ex finally pushed me to get through. I don't remember if I gave it an 8.5 or 9, but I wouldn't fault anyone that put it over the NES game (or vice versa). Much like I wouldn't fault a Contra fan for preferring the 16-bit games over the NES ones.

Punch-Out is all patterns. I think that's true until you reach Tyson. There's definitely some RNG going on with Tyson.
I'm playing a Punch-Out!! inspired game right now, but it uses RNG constantly for the fighter attacks. I've save-stated to test (reloading before barrages) and it's all random attack sequences. Definitely makes fights trickier. I'll talk more about this game after I've finished it.
kids would rent this (like Ex) and probably spend days playing it straight I absolutely put a lot of time into Punch-Out!! back in the '80s and early '90s. I didn't actually beat Tyson myself until 2019 though. I made it to him back in the day as a kid, but he smacked me down every time. Yet I beat him at 40. So much for "reflexes diminish with age". I am sure you can beat Tyson too. Can't blame you for that, time compression and all. That'd be a shame because Super Punch-Out!! is outstanding. And coming right off Punch-Out!! you would likely breeze through most of Super Punch-Out!!, until you reached Rick and Nick.

I just jumped in for a few minutes and got spanked by Sandman again.
I think another reason why this stresses me out more than hard games I enjoy, is not having full movement over Mac. It wouldn't make sense for that to be a thing here. But so this being a stationary puzzler in ways makes it extra taxing to me, lol.

Yes... I'm gonna do another boxing game methinks. And I did... Title: Wade Hixton's Counter PunchPlatform: Game Boy Advance Region release played: USA Year of release: 2004 Developer: Inferno Games Publisher: Destination Software Graphics: 4/5 Audio: 4/5 Challenge: 4/5 Fun factor: 3/5 Quick Thoughts: Wade Hixton's Counter Punch is an arcade boxing game for GBA, which takes more than a little inspiration from Punch-Out!!. The plot concerns a down on his luck redneck who gets stuck in a middle of nowhere town after his car breaks down there. Said mullet-sporting dude ends up boxing to make enough money to fix his car, as he goes around town getting into fight after fight. Wade Hixton's also incorporates an economy system, allowing the player to buy boxing upgrades using money the player wins in fights (and yes you can grind fights). While Wade Hixton's Counter Punch does not live up to its obvious influence (except perhaps in difficulty), the game's sense of humor and well animated sprites add a lot of charm to the fight. +Well animated, large sprites. +Humorous premise with a few genuinely funny cutscenes. +Above average OST (especially the "rave" fight). +The ability to "level up" your fighter if so desired. +The player can buy amusing "cheats" to use in fights. -It's Punch-Out!! in all but name. -Except it's not as well designed/polished as Punch-Out!!. -All the fights pretty much feel the same, just incrementally faster timing. -I had to beat a woman down to the mat. -The final boss, "Don", gives ol' Tyson a run for his money. Ex's time to beat: 2 hours Ex's rating: 7/10

I was actually thinking about playing that one myself. I'm reminded of it any time I'm looking for games similar to Punch-Out!!
I tried out Ready 2 Rumble, and played quite poorly. I clearly don't understand what's expected of me in a game like that. I had trouble even landing hits. There's a Dreamcast version, but I was playing on the N64 because I happened to have that hooked up.

Sandman and Super Macho Man (fake!) down for the count. Super Macho Man wasn't too hard, just had to get the timing down to dodge his spinning punch roundhouses, that he sometimes did 3 or 8 times it seems so that tripped me up haha.
Now Mr Dream just one shots me. I'm sweating again, time for another break.
