I thought about getting an auto-fire controller for my 360, but the thing is this. I have beaten many many 6th and 7th gen action games, and DMC1 is the first one to make my arm go on fire. Normally this only happens with 8/16-bit shmups that don't support auto-fire. So I'm hesitant to buy a ~$40 aftermarket 360 controller just for one game. But it's not a bad suggestion. I just can't understand why Hideki Kamiya decreed that if you want auto-fire for the guns in DMC1, then you have to play the rest of the game on easy mode. And in addition, why it takes so many shots to kill even a scrub monster. To me it's all just incredibly dumb design in that regard. But I'll stop whinging about it now. I do enjoy exploring the gothic environs of DMC1. That's the aspect that makes me want to keep playing.

Have you fought a giant spider in a hallway yet? Maaaaan that freaking part.
Eventually you just want to use guns as supplemental/score damage in between all the melee action. The shotgun can be nice for crowd control and heavy damage up close. More style points generally nets you more orbs in these games. But yeah, sometimes you can't get around it with flying enemies and such, plus I'm still kind of sketchy on my memories of the first game haha. The legend goes that Hideki Kamiya didn't know about DMC2's development until he read about it in an ad/newspaper on a train. They brought in Itsuno to finish the project but he couldn't salvage that mess. The guns are overpowered and basically all you do in DMC2. As in, more the half the bosses were like helicopters and stuff you can't do anything else to. I don't think anyone ever tested that game. It's quite obvious anyone involved on DMC1 had nothing to do with this one. No clue what Capcom was thinking.
I do enjoy exploring the gothic environs of DMC1. That's the aspect that makes me want to keep playing. The first one had some Demon's/Dark Souls vibes to me, haha. Since I finally played DMC1 after some of those actually.
I like that DMC1 and DMC3 feel a bit like a big Zelda dungeon.

So how long has it been since you and Sarge played through DMC1?

Going off my PSN trophies, I beat it on 4th Feb 2013. Wow, almost a decade? lol.
I only beat DMC1 once on Normal, since that felt like a major accomplishment anyways. But DMC3/DMC4 are the ones I'd say I "mastered" and beat on every difficulty. This reminds me I actually played DMC4 first on the 360. I don't know why... just one of those cases of jumping randomly into a series at some point and then loving it.

What's your thoughts on DmC and DMC5?

I never really want to lump in DmC into the conversation, even though it's the IP and all. But it's a Ninja Theory game during an era when Japanese publishers were having an identity crisis, Capcom especially. I know it's lame to write something off without trying it, but I saw enough videos and opinions around DmC that make it look horrendous to me. I did enjoy Enslaved which they developed, but the combat was super average. Heavenly Sword sucked to me and their newer stuff doesn't interest me at all. Why give a subpar action developer the grandfather of 3D character action game IP's? The writing and all looked really tryhard/emo too. Dante was cooler in this timeline because he cussed more I guess.
Itsuno doesn't even acknowledge it. When DMC5 finally got greenlit, the general sentiment from even Capcom themselves was that DMC post DMC4 was finally getting another game... they pretty much ignore DmC now. Not like it was a financial flop or anything, but that just ain't Devil May Cry.
DMC5 is incredible. I'll get back to it someday to play with the other extra characters. I think it would be one of the hardest games ever to beat on all difficulties. I knew it'd be a time sink and so I didn't get too obsessed with it, but I look forward to going back to it someday. I still think DMC3 is probably my favorite overall.

Ex : I beat it back in July 2019 for one of our Club Retros. Here's my words from then: Xeogred: I played through Klonoa 2 some time ago. Very fun game overall. I really enjoyed the remake of the original on Wii as well. I've actually been playing something for this theme (finally!): Halo: Combat Evolved. Yep. The venerable, highly-influential shooter that is still revered today. So far, I like it, although I'm not sure I'd say it's amazing yet. But so much of that is tied to its being a product of its time - so many things that modern console FPSs do are rooted in conventions that started here. Anyway, I'm on the Silent Cartographer mission. I actually had to replay the first mission and part of the second because the game decided to not save my progress properly on my old profile. Deleting and creating a new one seems to have fixed it. I should consider tying this into a CRT instead, but it does look pretty good on my LCD.

Well you certainly liked DMC1 more than I have so far.
You may be right about:
"I don't know that there was anything this fast or fluid up until this point."
This style of super fast "character action", DMC1 could have been the originator.
As for Halo:
>so many things that modern console FPSs do are rooted in conventions that started here
It's been a long time, but what I remember Halo doing first was auto-regenerating health, some kind of energy shield system, and making online FPS-ing dirt simple on console.

TIL for DMC3: So basically USA DMC3 was super difficult because USA players thought Normal mode was actually "Normal" when in reality it was Hard mode. And they consider the Special Edition easy because it's "Normal" mode is actually Normal. Wow, nice Job there Crapcom.
