Ex They must have been feeling nostalgic for the '90s, because who was still pulling those shenanigans by 2005?

Yeah, I'd have a hard time thinking of other cases of that happening in the PS2 era.
I'm pretty sure DMC3 on the HD collection is based on the SE release, so the difficulty balancing should be like the original. Normal is still tough though!
Sarge: That's one of my favorite levels. I think you're in for a good time overall.
I was just looking at some of those 2001 lists again last night and actually surprised at how many classics came out that year and that I've already beaten. Guess that was the whole point of this theme. Lots of big hits in 2001!

The other thing Halo did was basically codify the dual-stick FPS setup on console. You do still have health, but also regenerating shields, so it's kind of in both worlds. I like the setup overall, since it keeps you from having to restart too often.
I did end up enjoying that last level. I figure I'll keep pushing forward. It's a big gap in my gaming resume, anyway.
Also, I beat the original release of DMC3, and yes, it's hard. I didn't know about the shenanigans back then, but certainly was aware now. The Special Edition version should effectively match up with the 360 port.

I remember Timesplitters being the first dual joystick FPS I played, but yeah it was still chunky and the PS1-PS3 form factor never felt too great for that genre to me. Halo felt like a dream compared to what came before via controllers and FPS's.
The only thing I kind of grew to resent with Halo, was the "realistic" trend to limiting you to ~2 weapons that spread across dozens of other FPS's. I'm glad we're kind of over that now though and the Doomguy pockets have returned in some stuff. Gimmie all the guns.
It works in Halo. But in other FPS's, it felt stupid lol.

T Halo as basically codify the dual-stick FPS setup on console Codify it in the popular consensus? Yep.
Invent the concept? Nope.
Halo was not the first console FPS to use dual-stick FPS controls. There was a game on PS1 that did it prior, in the modern fashion. I say that because I often see people give Halo this credit incorrectly. I don't think you were insinuating that though. I think you were insinuating Halo made the control scheme popular, which it did. >also, I beat the original release of DMC3Have you beat any of the other DMCs, thoughts on those? - I made it to mission 11 in DMC1 tonight. I'm definitely enjoying the game more the further I get into it. I think I'm starting to "get" what folks like about this series. There's still some BS in its design regardless. And yeah, it's gettin' tougher. But man LOVE the gothic architecture in this game, that stuff's fabulous. Reminds me a bit of DeS/DS aesthetic sometimes, but it predated those games.

I think you're in good hands from here on with DMC from the sound of it. Now I hope you get to DMC3 sooner than later to get your take on that one. And I said it elsewhere, DMC2 isn't even a terrible game, just a bad DMC. So if you're inclined to play that first doing them in order, it's worth a look. Though DMC3 is a prequel anyways... then I think DMC4 must be post DMC2. Huh, now that I think about it, maybe DMC4-DMC5 ignore DMC2? Ah who cares.
This theme always comes to mind to me.
The DMC series' music is pretty weird. I don't even know what else to compare it to and it's not something I love or go out of my way to listen to on my own, but I wouldn't have it any other way. lol
That said, I think the first DMC had the coolest and darkest BGM in between the action. It's no surprise, since it's Masami Ueda who scored the early Resident Evil's too.
That on top of the awesome gothic atmosphere left a good mark on me. Kudos to Capcom on the HD remasters too, I thought they were excellently done.
Looking forward to seeing if you can beat DMC3 on Dante Must Die mode too Ex.

DMC2 isn't even a terrible game, just a bad DMC. I'd play DMC2 before DMC3. My gamer OCD couldn't accept otherwise. I don't know if my right forearm could handle that grindy nonsense. Beating Urban Reign on Normal difficulty was about the limit pain-wise, insofar as frantic button-mashing action's concerned.
Heaven or Hell mode sounds fun though.

Heaven and Hell is where your standard guns come in handy.
Check out this one in DMC4...
I will note, the most viable way to play DMC's higher difficulties is basically through NG+ with a lot of your stuff carrying over. I think sometimes you still have to re-acquire certain weapons and such. So it can be easier in ways at times, but yeah the juicing up all the enemies and bosses eventually gets pretty crazy. You really have to master everything to 100% these games.
Something I didn't do with DMC1, lol.

Sheesh, Assault on the Control Room is too long a mission. Should have ended a good fifteen minutes ago at a minimum. Been enjoying the game overall, though.
