Lots of things happening in 2001. The PS2 was on its second year, and was starting to get great games, while the PS1 was still seeing releases; the Dreamcast got its last significant wave of games; the GBA came out early in the year, the Game Boy Color got some of its best games, and the GameCube and Xbox arrived towards the end. I have strong candidates for this theme, all on the PS2, if I feel like gaming; Onimusha, GTA III, Devil May Cry, Extermination.

Love this cover. I played this again just a year or two ago and visually it still looks excellent.
There may or may not be some games in that list Ex posted that could be great candidates for me.

Right now I'm leaning towards finally finishing FFX, and giving DMC1 an earnest attempt.

Just jump to DMC1. I don't think you and FFX were ever meant to be.

Well I will play DMC1 first, mainly because I'm already in the middle of another JRPG (Ever Oasis on 3DS), and I recently realized trying to play two (or more) JRPGs at once is dumb. That said, I have a FFX save from my last attempt that's about 1/3rd of the way through that game, so I could pickup from there. The reason I keep coming back to FFX is because I really love its world design, that oceanic/tropical aesthetic is really great. My problem with FFX is its plot and some of its characters are utter trash. But who knows maybe I'd change my mind if I ever passed the halfway mark. (Doubt it.)

I'm intrigued about what you'll think of DMC. I still found it fantastic visiting it all these years later, but it's also not a game that messes around, and sometimes the difficulty is compounded by wonky RE-style camera angles.

It is indeed balls to the wall hard. I found it harder than DMC3 personally, but most say otherwise. My reasoning is that the combat system is way more refined in DMC3 with better controls and just everything, so it was like I could apply my own high skills from this genre to the game more. DMC1 is more confined and seemed tougher for it, but I still love it too. It tries to be more serious, but it's chalk full of that so-bad-it's-good cheesy dialogue and stuff like the 90's Resident Evil's haha.
I plan to start up one of my picks for this month this weekend. Here's my riddle that probably isn't hard to figure out... the game I have in my mind might not specifically be the one that influenced one of my new top favorite game designer/directors, but the director of said pick this month did another game that was the main influence. lol...

I'm intrigued about what you'll think of DMC. I will play it this month. The legit copy I own is via this: That collection itself released in 2012, so even the remastered version is HRG compliant now.
The difficulty doesn't worry me. I've beaten a few difficult 3D games in recent years.

I started up Ico and this picture illustrates how it makes me feel. You are that tiny human drowning in this tremendously thick and amazing atmosphere. I have long had a hunch I'll like this one even more than Shadow of the Colossus, which Hidetaka Miyazaki loves. And I bet he played Ico too. This one seems like it'll be even more apparent with the influence its had on Demon's Souls and such.
Long time coming on this one, I guess 21 years!
