Guess it was the capacitors with the Xbox.

Yeah, that's definitely an issue with older electrolytic capacitors. The Turbo Duo was notorious for having such bad caps in it that they sometimes leaked from the factory! They can cause corrosion that will damage the board, perhaps permanently. Thankfully, mine has been recapped. The Duo-R/RX has less issues.

For some reason my brother hated the Sega Saturn 3D pad. He's not much of a gamer anymore, so I don't know how representative his views would be of the larger retro gaming world, but is that a commonly held view among retro gamers? I thought most everyone liked the Saturn 3D pad.

Was the "3D pad" the one on the right? I think I've maybe only held that controller in my hands ONCE! I knew one guy down the block in the late 90's that had a Sega Saturn with Virtua Cop, Fighter, and some other random stuff. I'm having a hard time thinking if I've ever had another friend that owned one haha. Controller wise I feel like I've almost never seen the big one in the wild. The two modded Saturn's I have came with the left variant and it's pretty legit. Just a reshaped Genesis 6-pad mainly.

I've only used the Saturn 3D pad once, a friend back in the '90s had one. I remember it seemed huge, and the d-pad wasn't well positioned. The analog hat seemed okay for playing NiGHTS though. I certainly didn't feel the need to go and buy myself one. Although that's more to do with never having been a fan of the Saturn in general honestly.

That's actually my main Saturn controller. I've had one for years. It's fine, actually! I can see where some might not find it that comfortable, but it seems pretty nice to me. I sure am glad y'all were talking about Saturn stuff, though, as I kinda checked it out and apparently my cat turned it on at some point. I'm not sure how long it has been on... but it's still working, and at least the drive wasn't spinning since it was idling at the clock screen.

Unfortunately I think the small size of the 8Bitdo Genesis pad could be a deal breaker for me. I messed with it for about 30 minutes last night playing a variety of games and was almost immediately feeling a bit cramped up. In my image a page or two back you can see the thing is nearly the same size as an official/Buffalo SNES controller, but with the Genesis style of 3 buttons in a row and this thing being really small, resting my thumb across A, B, and C... I was finding most games with their default controls to NOT be that comfortable. Seems like the only issue people have are with the wireless feature, which I didn't really care about. So am I the only guy with large hands here handling this thing? www.amazon.com/8Bitdo-Wireless-Gamepad-Original-Genesis-Drive/dp/B07HB1XFQW/Sarge : Did you get that Joyzz controller? It looks a bit bigger and with a better grip curve on the ends. I wonder if it feels better than this.
EDIT: Suddenly this thing just came out of nowhere though and looks nice / affordable:
These controllers still look dinky in the hands of some of these video reviews. Man, I guess I just remember the Genesis controllers being massive from my childhood... lol.
Whoa! Saturn variant too...
Saturn version looks the biggest and is very enticing. Any thoughts on these and Retro-Bit? Apparently they are planning to release N64 controllers as well designed after the Hori Japan models.

Maybe some kind HRG member around here who still owns an original Genesis gamepad can take some measurements for us. I too, would like to know the dimension differences between the real controller and the 8BitDo version.

I can confirm that the original 3-button Genesis pads are pretty damn big. Bigger than a SNES pad. The 6-button pad was smaller, but not that tiny, either. Here's an interesting note, though, from Segaretro:
"There are two main types of Six Button Control Pad, a smaller model originally intended for Japan, and a larger one intended for the west. The differences in size are due to a perception that the Japanese and people living in similar Asian countries have genetically smaller hands - it is an idea that passed through to the Sega Saturn and even to the Xbox before the realisation it might have been easier to produce one single pad for all regions. Indeed the larger variant was phased out by the end of the decade to cut costs and the Japanese variant would replace it worldwide." So a more recent 6-button model would be smaller than what we had in the early / mid-'90s.
That giant Saturn analog controller came out with Nights. I bought the game used, so I never owned one.
