The info you gave is probably more helpful than my spitball, though.

Penumbra can't touch this. 2 hours gone in a blink.
The bad news: Don't think that hack worked. I noticed there was some No Interlacing code in the joystick hack I'm using (same CRC). Well I slotted in that new one and maybe it made things a smudge smoother, but the player menu still has this weird shaking going on. This game is chalk full of weirdness with emulation. Had to turn on "Preload Frame Data" to even see the lava (and maybe other liquid effects?), and anything above Native PS2 resolution has texture issues, even with the sky. Anyways maybe there's still some options to tinker with. But it's mostly playable now. The dual joystick mod still doesn't do anything with the right stick's x-axis, so it's a unique experience to say the least. You can only look and up that way, but that beats L2/R2. Sometimes it feels nicer using the d-pad to get around.
EDIT: Nevermind, I watched the video... the very first main Interlacing option in plugins was off for some reason. Automatic fixes the menu stutter/shake.
Still doesn't seem safe to touch the resolution though, but I can probably endure it (just gotta bump up the brightness a lot since these games were made for CRT's lol).

Xeogred I'm envious you get to play KF4 fresh. Sometimes I wish I could selectively erase games from my memory, and re-experience them completely anew. KF4 would be one of those games.

I'm excited to see what weird abilities and things you can do in this one. Like the flute that created bridges and stuff in the others. I'm also expecting the usual inverted difficulty here, with you getting insanely powerful and becoming the monster in the end. I hope there's some crazy magical swords that spew out ice shards and stuff.
I got one Crystal Flask so far. Gotta make sure I don't miss a Golden Goddess fountain or something for 80% of the game like I did KF2. But that'll make my KF2 run be eternally memorable. Still my favorite honestly, but KF3 was another 10/10.

I want to say a lot of things but I won't, I couldn't bear to spoil your experience. Trust me, by the end of this journey, you will not be disappointed.

I'll go to bat for it for sure. And yes, inverted difficulty - you get way more powerful by the end. And it's one of the most oppressively atmospheric games I've ever played, and it's wild that they did it on PS2.

And it's one of the most oppressively atmospheric games I've ever played, and it's wild that they did it on PS2. That's how it goes in the other KF's and Shadow Tower even. Have you played any of the others yet?
I laughed last night thinking of how much more I like KF over ST. I was wacking some walls, barrels, etc, when I got the pitchaxe. No worries about my weapons and armor breaking here. KF is more Zelda/Metroid like in ways I love with you getting stronger, more gear and abilities, etc. (to be fair the equipment degrading in both ST is handled well though. You usually have dozens of things to swap around, so it's not a huge deal. I'm glad I played them, but I definitely like KF more. In a mere 2 hours into KF4, pretty sure I already like it more than both ST's).
The enemies in KF4 have been a nice surprise so far though: - Tiny bats that can move up and down, that was never a thing in the others. - The evil tree enemies... I laughed when I heard that weird chunky sound around an abandoned house and knew they were nearby. Thought it'd be an easy kill with the more open environments here (they were real scary in claustrophobic KF1), but NOPE. Now they can do some kind of quake attack with their roots underground all around them. - The big slugs around the beginning were tricky to figure out for an early enemy. Seems best to let them lunge at you, then go in for a hit. Like a lot of enemies here. - I was happy to see the classic early skeleton + secret door with a chest+ tougher skeleton like in the others. But they couldn't seem to pass through the secret door line, so I took my time there and beat them that way.
The atmosphere is already amazing. Caves and mines are pretty vanilla and nothing exciting, but I can't wait to see what dungeons and enviros await in this one.
Going in 100% blind here. Not even going to listen to later OST tracks. It's always a bit blissful when you can finally play something old and have no idea what to expect.

Going in 100% blind here. I hope you keep it that way and take your time. Thoroughly explore every nook and cranny. There are a LOT of secrets to discover in KF4. Also I hope you paid attention to the story at the beginning. Understanding the plot pays off in the end.

Crazy that such dark and ominous screenshots bring back such sweet happy nostalgia. I'm stoked you're finally playing through KF4, will be interested to see where it falls in your ranking after you finish it. - I'm not feeling much interest in playing 1995 games (these yearly themes weren't my idea), but I will hit up some quicky classic horror stuff this month. The vast majority of my gaming is still going towards Red Dead Redemption 2... that game is my spirit animal. Also been spending a decent chunk of time solo-ing a campaign in The Red Cathedral, but that's an analog game so I digress.
