Yeah I've played it. I actually prefer AD&D to Dragon Buster II though. (And I prefer both to the original Dragon Buster, which is ass).

I put some time into Heroes of the Lance on SEGA Master System today. When I first read its manual I was genuinely intrigued. This is an action-RPG of sorts, presented in a side-view format. You have a large party, with inventory, magic systems, stats, dungeon navigation, item usage for puzzles, lots of things that sound promising. Unfortunately, the actual play of the thing was awful. The biggest issue is how slowly your characters move, they make a snail seem like a cheetah. Then there's the awful combat, which is about as graceful as a drunken albatross. Well the concept was promising but the execution is lacking to say the least. So I dropped this one. That said, I'm playing another D&D game now that has thus far been pretty fun.

Dang, your brief review there was a roller coaster of emotions just reading haha. Sounded promising, then... not so much. "drunken albatross"

How does the SMS version compare to the NES port? Neither are considered very good, although I always wondered if there was a gem hidden somewhere beneath the surface. It always looked pretty intriguing to me.

How does the SMS version compare to the NES port? I don't know, haven't played the NES version. I'm also in no hurry to play Dragons of Flame on Famicom after Heroes of the Lance. But who knows, maybe you'd like this stuff on Nintendo?

I have to wonder if they're better on PC.

Kind of sounds like a Western Sorcerian. I know I tried Heroes SMS a long time ago, just because it was one of the few games on the system people would call a RPG. They'd also pretend Lord of the Sword was one (wonder if Ex played that one).

I've played it briefly in the past, but not long enough to have a definitive opinion good or bad.

Dunno, but I have given it some run. It's not bad, but yeah, probably more of an action-adventure than RPG, even if there are some commonalities.

Back when "Worst NES Games Evar!!!" lists were still fun and fashionable, you'd see Heroes of the Lance on every single one.
It truly is bad.
