I think I'm a bigger fan of Yoji Shinkawa myself, for some of the strongly unique gaming related artists out there. But yeah Anamo is amazing and his style really shines in the anime movie Angel's Egg. dadutogel.blogspot.com/2014/10/angel-egg.html

Objectively, I recognize that Yoji Shinkawa is pretty woke. I'm not a fan of Metal Gear though, so that dulls the appeal a bit for me. One think I like about Amano is that he draws realistic masculine male characters. Not a fan of the androgynous male characters so many other artists create. As a kid I had a hard time getting into Final Fantasy VII because the transition from Amano art to Nomura art was so staggering. Nomura is the worst character designer I have ever seen. Cloud and Sephiroith look like 13-year-old kids who are miffed about detention. It's so friggin' terrible. Now, as far as female characters go, Satoshi Urushihara = god-tier.

Nomura is the worst character designer I have ever seen. I agree wholeheartedly. I still don't understand how he weaseled his way into such a prominent position at Square back in yonder days. Maybe he was somebody's nephew. Overall I agree with this. I love Urushihara's work, but sometimes I think he got carried away with the shininess effect.

I really don't hate Nomura's art in general... some of his 90's stuff is cool and some recent designs are solid. Yay/Nay?
In general he does females way better though. I'm a simple man and a sucker for how ridiculous some of his female designs are (clothes wise, or lack thereof?)... but he just can't do grizzled guys worth anything.
But yeah his "style" is a bit childish in comparison to these other artists and trends closer to generic anime or whatever.
Don't get me started on how he seemingly destroys runs Square Enix now.

Let's also not forget that Japan does tend to like their androgynous pretty boys.

I like the perspective, and those ghouls are very Dragon Quest-ish.

I love the eyes on the pots and graves, haha. Classic Capcom / videogame vibes there.

Ya the eyes are a great touch.
I immediately thought Gargoyle's Quest. Which game/series is it?
I do see the semblance to Dragon's Quest.

I immediately thought Gargoyle's Quest. Which game/series is it? You nailed it. Vintage official concept art from Gargoyle's Quest.
