Toriyama's peak period was definitely the mid to late '80s. He's been very consistent overall stylistically, but yeah I think this was the period where his work became more polished, and he still had the energy and creativity of (relative) youth. He burned out with DBZ and became a lot less active later. When it comes to Dragon Quest, it's funny though. I'll hear Square will send him a bunch of notes/drafts or whatever of what they want for the next games' new cast... and he doesn't give a damn and just draws whatever he wants and they can't do anything about it. 
Toyotarou's done a good job carrying his torch with the Dragon Ball Super manga and such. Toriyama himself... his designs for Super were pretty boring too and his characters have gotten increasingly skinnier, which isn't consistent with DBZ. lol

I still like Toriyama's later work but they have become a bit busier. I may just be a simple man, though, who likes simple things. I agree on Toyotarou's tendency to skinnify his characters. I don't understand why Toriyama's apparent prodigy can't get his characters to build up a little... |

Sci-fi anime Dragon Quest. Yep.  I'm on the snow planet and just got the "Ice Digger" vehicle. So I made some good progress today so far. |
