How'd you end up handling the last boss? In the first part you just wall jump over his ground flames, then land and slash until it's time to jump again. When he turns into the floating head, you have to slash his projectiles away, dodge his lightning, and then when the head comes to ground level slice like crazy for every hit you can get. You have to just keep moving. When the head is up in the air, you can still catch a slice on it on the downward curve of its sine pattern. I did eventually get aggravated and used my "desperation attack" (the Ryu life draining move) a few times to finish off the final boss's last bit of health. SMS games I think you should given an honest try (more than 5 minutes) to: Alex Kidd in Miracle World (It really is a quality platformer.) Aztec Adventure (It's reminiscent of SoM at times, no really.) Battlemaniacs (It's not a port of NES Battletoads, and the first level was fun.) Fantasy Zone II (Best shmup on SMS.) Power Strike II (Second best shmup on SMS.) Quartet (About as close to Contra as you'll get on SMS.) Shinobi (Treat it like a cover shooter, and you might like it.) Sonic Chaos (Unless you don't like Sonic, this is legit!) Wonder Boy (It's way better than Adventure Island.) Zillion (The learning curve is worth it; excellent exploratory platformer.) There are quite a few good SMS games I'm not beating myself this go around, either because I already beat them before, or I'm saving them for White Whale month. That's why in this month I'm just trying to beat SMS games that are new to me so to speak. Here's a list of just about every SMS game broken down with a genre column: nostalgiatechs.com/sega-master-system-games-list/When I was a kid I owned DD on both SMS and NES. I liked the NES version better. However the SMS port is still pretty decent.

Alex Kidd in Shinobi World is cool too. Way easier than Miracle World.

Interesting strategy. I had trouble effectively "tanking" him when he hit ground level, so I actually did timed wall jumps to hit him while he was up in the air. Direct contact with him sucks. I may have to try your strat if I ever play through it again.
Anyway, I sure would make a lot more progress if I'd stop messing around on the Internet...

toei, you're right. Renegade is quite a bit better on Master System. It feels more solidly programmed. Also, you can definitely tell Natsume was involved; I saw Iku Mizutani (of Shadow of the Ninja and Shatterhand fame) listed as a director and music director. Very cool! Anyway, it's a short but pretty solid experience. Just... don't let the guy at the end shoot you, or you die instantly. Hey, that's a lot more realistic than most games! The right strategy ended up being to use that running attack.

The right strategy ended up being to use that running attack. That part really made an impression on me at the time. The guy isn't so tough, but I loved that his gun just kills you outright. Made it feel real, and raised the stakes of the fight without making it overly difficult. There's actually a callback to that in Kunio-tachi no Banka on Super Famicom, which was intended as a direct sequel to Renegade. The final boss has a gun too, and while I don't think it kills you outright since the way health and lives work is different, it does massive damage. Once you're aware of it, though, it's not hard to avoid. I should have totally recommended that game during Fan-Translation February, since it's one of my favorite SNES beat-'em-ups, but I guess it slipped my mind.

Reminds me of Urban Reign's final boss: If he manages to shoot you, it can kill you in one or two hits.

Yeah, we've got that shared experience. While the guy in Renegade is a pushover, he takes a few more hits than the Urban Reign dude. That was an awfully cathartic way to end what was one of the most brutal gaming experiences in my life, though.
Actually, I wonder if some of the Urban Reign team was intentionally calling back to Renegade with that last fight? (Or maybe Willy from Double Dragon.) Wouldn't surprise me.

Although I still would like for you to finish God Hand and offer your thoughts. God Hand is kinda brutal-ish at times but in a much more friendly manner. That's what I was insinuating at least. Also Double Dragon II ends with a boss with a gun too doesn't it? I bet if we dug into the concept, we'd find an awful lot of beat 'em ups end that way. - Back to SMS... these are the game's I'm considering beating next: Dragon Crystal Golden Axe Warrior Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse Miracle Warriors Montezuma's Revenge Featuring Panama JoeI don't know which I'll hit next, nor if I'll finish all of them before month's end. But at any rate, those are the games I've got left in the bucket.

Yeah, Mr. X in Streets of Rage has one, too. Although I'm betting Renegade's grandpappy status in the beat-'em-up genre makes the inspiration a natural choice. (Seriously, while I might turn my nose up at it a little bit now, it was remarkably influential to the brawler genre.)
I'm having a tough time remembering anything but the NES version of DD2, which doesn't end with a guy with a gun. (It has the clone fight, then the boss of the Shadow Warriors in all his ridiculous leaping lariat, phasing glory.) I think Willy may pop back in for DD2 arcade, though.

Dragon Crystal has 30 floors, I made it to floor 11 today, save-stated there. I'm having a good run, on my third go. (My first two runs did not go so well due to cursed items.) For one of the very first console roguelikes, this has been damn good so far. But things remain to be seen how unfairly sadistic DC may become towards the end.
