I enjoyed MM11 a lot myself. My only complaints were the lack of more Wily stages, the music was so-so compared to the norm, and I don't know why Proto Man and Bass were MIA. Other than that, I thought the Gear system was pretty neat and a new spin on things that I'd like to see fleshed out more. I don't think it blew the world away though so I wonder if we'll get a sequel or not. Maybe we'll get another new X game next perhaps? In interviews around the launch of the game and bringing the series back, they finally explained a bit why Mega Man was dormant for years though. Inafune leaving the company as he and others did was like, a death in the family and the IP was haunted or something. They were weary to try and step back into the series even though they wanted to. Maybe it's just a Japanese business culture thing, but I'm glad they finally got over that hump so hopefully Mega Man isn't ignored as much going forward.

Well, at any rate, I think it's back, and hopefully they'll green-light another one. I don't know if I want them to explore the X series again yet.

Yeah, Mega Man 11 was solid but it didn't floor me or anything and I didn't really have much urge to go back to it. I thought it established a good base for them to build off of. They've got a nice engine and a pretty graphical style ready to go so they can put all their time into polishing the gameplay of the next one to a crystal shine. Hopefully they do better on the music as well. 12 has the potential to be something really special if they ever decide to make it.

12 could be awesome and I want it. But yeah, I think ultimately starting up a new "line" in the series would have been for the best here. Start with a new clean slate and come up with some new characters, bosses, main villain, etc. I'd be super into that, something more along the lines of X and Zero perhaps tonally. I wouldn't even care if they fill in some tropes like, your evil brother or S rank red guy buddy, female sidekick like Roll, etc. But a completely new facelift would probably generate more interest than keeping a current line of the series going still.

I actually think that the retro revival was for the better. I don't think Mega Man needed a reinvention, it just needed that creative spark back.

Yeah, if they were going to try and bring Mega Man back from the dead, going with the OG and giving it a new spin was the way to go.
Confusing people with all the spin-offs is part of what killed it in the first place.

Guess that's funny coming from you two when I'm always the guy that says I could play 100 NES Mega Man's. Really though, it's the social media era and companies have it easier than ever to communicate with the fans and media so people wouldn't be confused here. I think the marketing was solid enough, clearly showing off the new character designs, the Gear system, and whatnot. I don't think it would have been hard to do a completely new line in the series, but one that sticks to the simple traditional roots of the franchise and that would have been easy to showcase in a trailer. Something new might have been more exciting to the masses, since it's clear this didn't blow any socks off. But it sounds like it did okay enough to keep Mega Man alive again.
It's interesting in comparison how Bloodstained kind of destroyed MM11, sales and reception wise (I'm assuming here though). I don't know if I'd buy into the idea of the Castlevania fanbase being *bigger* than Mega Man's, but maybe it is after all these years. That, or it's obvious that SoTN has one of those insanely diehard fanbases that'll go to the ends of the Earth for it, so there was a lot more vocal support and fever behind this than a new Mega Man. But if Konami did another 2D Igavania instead recently, would that have been as successful as Bloodstained was?

Fans are one thing but I think Castlevania is more accessible to a broader audience and played by more people. I get what you're saying that a new brand could have helped Mega Man with that but given the Mighty No. 9 debacle and how Mega Man as a franchise was so fucked I think most people just wanted wanted to see the real deal in action again and not another successor.

Yeah fair point. I'm glad Might No 9 is behind us. What a disaster.

You know, Mighty No. 9 was a disappointment, but I don't think it was an actively bad game. In fact, there were points at which the game was legitimately fun. But there were a lot of boneheaded decisions in there, too, which drags the whole experience down to mediocrity... but it's an uneven mediocrity.
