Yeah, it's definitely rarer for me, too. It happened last year with Tears of the Kingdom, but not a whole lot that really made me go, "Man, I can't wait to get home and play more of this." God of War for PS4 was another that did that recently.
It's also not the first meaty Metroidvania that I've taken down - I put very similar time into both Bloodstained and Hollow Knight. This one had a different emphasis, though, in that the puzzle platforming and just the general movement and moveset made the whole thing feel fantastic to play. And it's too bad that you get the grapple sash thing pretty late in the game, because flying across chasms with it is all sorts of fun.

I put 16.5 hours into Bloodstained and that was long enough for me. I like metroidvanias to be between 8-12 hours long, that's my sweet spot for the genre. (I see Hollow Knight, according to HLTB, is 30-40 hours long on average... wow.) Your praise has bolstered my interest in The Lost Crown, but I'm still not gonna pay more than $30 for it (physical). Glad you got your money out of it regardless.

You can definitely finish it faster - I think HLTB has the basic run at 16 hours, although I expect that's going to make the endgame much tougher.

I put 21 hours into Bloodstained, despite IGT saying about 16. Or maybe I kept playing after 100%'ing the map? Hard to remember. Man that game was good! Can't wait for more.
Don't think I have a cap on what I want for Metroidvania's but just yeah, anything over 20 hours like I said the other day, seems like it's kind of pushing it and or abnormal. But if it's still awesome, that's cool to me. I could have kept going with Bloodstained.

That was how I felt about Bloodstained as well. PoP also had me just marveling when I'd hit a new area and think I got even more to explore. The scale is pretty impressive.

I haven't beaten as many metroidvanias as Sarge, but I'll bet I'm in second place on HRG. For me this is still the apex of the genre: Not that I mind seeking the next apex, mind.

No question that's one of the best. Nothing has dethroned Symphony of the Night for me, but there's been several that have come within spitting distance.

- Alwa's Awakening - AM2R
- Axiom Verge - Blaster Master Zero - Blaster Master Zero 2 - Blaster Master Zero 3 - Blasphemous
- Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night - Ghost Song
- Metroid Dread
- Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight - Odallus: The Dark Call
- Record of Lodoss War - Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth
- The Messenger
- Touhou Luna Nights - Xeodrifter
Rom hacks: - Super Metroid Ancient Chozo - Super Metroid Project Base - Metroid Rogue Dawn
I've beaten all the main Metroid's and Igavania's.

I was curious as to if I'm actually number one, but got tired of typing. I have indeed beaten a lot of Metroidvanias, haha. I've got a ton I've finished just on Steam alone, and I still keep thinking of ones I've finished. I need to get Ghost Song at some point, and I need to play through Touhou: Luna Nights.

Yeah I'm not trying too hard but just skimmed my Steam list, added "Xeodrifter" now haha. Nice short one there.
>Ghost Song
Admirable game... the heart is in it. But the deluge of Metroidvania's that dropped between this games announcement and then its actual release like a decade later, made Ghost Song feel a bit like "just another Metroidvania." It's fine, it wouldn't surprise me if it hits some people more than it did me. But yeah. It was on the easier side too. That might be why it wasn't a slam dunk for me.
>Touhou Luna Nights
And then this was a rather random one for me but left a big mark, because it somehow integrates legit shmup bullet hell mechanics into a Metroidvania and has some wild bosses. The final boss was a real challenge. Very cool mesh of genres here that makes it stick out a bit from the norm.
I think I'd like to hit up Blasphemous 2 next, even if the first felt a bit like I was just running the motions too. But yeah just glance at my list above and I've played a bit of this genre too. The novelty has worn off a tad. Need a bit more than just trying to be another Igavania or whatever.
I'd like to play more stuff like Cyber Shadow. It's technically one big interconnected map with some light backtracking, but overall it's pretty much just going through huge self contained levels and maintains intrigue over several hours worth. Amazing game.
