I didn't find them terribly useful, honestly. They don't do much damage to bosses, so the only thing they're really good for is crowd control.
Yeah, you get used to the pickup being on a different button. I actually very much appreciate that, as I can fight around food items without worrying about picking them up too early and wasting them.

Cherry's Star move does actually do some nice damage to bosses if you place it properly, and it breaks through those damn white semi-invincibility periods.

Ah, I didn't think about that. Honestly, I just tended to hold them, but maybe I should try to use them when bosses get super armor. Xeogred: As far as the last battle goes, you can actually fight one or the other when they get in the robot. The first time I beat it, the bro jumped in. This last time it was the sis. I've noticed the sister is actually kind of easy, though - she has a lot of vulnerable frames and tends to be a lot easier to approach.

Yeah I figured that's how the last boss can unfold. I was glad the brother jumped in the mech, since yeah I agree the sister is easier to handle.
I played some more today on my hard playthrough:
Axel - Yep he indeed sucks. This isn't the Axel I knew and loved from SoR1-3, lol. People were even easily stopping me mid normal combo. Cherry - Awesome. Floyd - Not bad once I got used to him. Maybe better than Max and Dr Zan for the big boys?
I then ran through a level with SoR1 Blaze. I'm guessing to offset the limitations of the earlier games, they just beef up your attack power and you do a lot more damage. At least that seemed to be the case.
I've unlocked up to Max so far, so I guess I then need SoR2 Axel, Blaze, and Skate. Can't wait to get SoR3 Axel though. Can the SoR3 characters still run and roll up or down? Wonder if their double forward move levels up too with the stars you have. Hmm...

Xeogred Yes, the SOR1 characters are powerhouses in this game, and SOR3 Axel does keep his roll. I wish everybody in the game could roll. I don't remember if you dash attack levels up like before.

I knocked out my Hard run. Was favoring SOR4 Adam again for the last few levels.
I can now confirm it's SOR2 that's my least favorite Blaze. Although still fun to play, but some of her moves leave her pretty open. It seems like the SOR2 characters are quite powerful too, but have a few more options so maybe they're not as hard hitting as the SOR1 characters. Max doesn't seem good here at all, the SOR4 enemies aren't really tailored around him so yeah haha. I've noticed it seems harder to wall combo with the classic characters, which makes sense when that wasn't really a thing until SOR4.
Very Hard definitely beefs things up with more enemies and you have to fight two of those metal robot guys in the first level. How can you even avoid when they magnetize all those metal melee weapons and hurl them at you?

I just keep remembering games I've beaten months ago and I forgot to mention earlier.
Warhammer 40k: Space Marine [2011] As somebody who doesn't care about the setting and had no expectations, this was surprisingly great fun. It's a 3rd person game which successfully mixes shooting and hack 'n slash gameplay. A Gears of War/God of War mashup of sorts, although there are no cover mechanics here. It doesn't do anything particularly new, but it's very well made and well paced. Actually, it does something which might very well be new for its time: glory kills that don't just look cool, but also refill your health. Very good, solid game.

@tsumuri
I've got that one on 360. Good to hear that it's above average. I'll admit I bought it for the cathartic violence.

Deadly Premonition 1 on the Switch is a bad port, yet I still loved my time with it. The game is a very unique experience, indeed. The writing, the music and attention to small story details in the gameplay make up for every flaw.
